We took a hike around Ring Mountain. There must be some exercises going on in the area, I saw this plane circling, a Hercules and then I even saw a chopper that looked a bit like a Comanche, it was too far away. The plane looked familiar but I can’t remember what it is, ttyymmnn have an answer? It had four counter rotating turbo props and a bunch of fuel on the wings . When they flew around ahead of us and gave them a wave, then they swung back around and went right over us, no idea if they saw me but we were on the big rock on top of the hill. At a distance I thought it was another Hercules but it wasn’t. The helicopter really has me curious, not sure what it was.

That looks like a C-130J Hercules. It has scimitar blades, but no counter-rotating props. The longer nose and all that fuel makes me think that it is outfitted for some kind of special ops. I’m at a rehearsal right now, but I can do a bit more digging later.

I read your post more closely. If you’re convinced that it had c-r props, I can only guess Airbus A400. It’s larger than the Herk.

That’s either a C-130J or an LM-100J, which is basically the same thing for th e civilian market. California Air National Guard doing training flights maybe?

That makes sense, I’m used to seeing Hercules and it looked a lot like one. The paint job disguises it a bi t and the nose is a lot bigger,

Well it had no markings, so it must be Cal Fire maybe? It was greyish blue and white. If those pods are fuel this thing can fly far. I looked up the variants you listed and this thing had a longer puffed up nose going back. It must be a very specialized aircraft.

I thought it was the airbus at first but those have a different tail configuration.

Based on the coloring and external tanks,I suspect that is a USMC KC-130J.

Yeah the markings are pretty faded with those colors. I was always around different color planes in the Corps. But all those tanks make sense, they refuel helos. I’m not sure what helo was flying around but it looked like a Comanche.

Well that never made it past the prototype stage, so probably not a RAH-66. But certainly could be an Apache (Army)

or a Cobra/Viper (Marines)

There are firefighting AH-1s as well:

As for your C-130 pic, seems like it could be this color scheme (this is “Ernie” a C-130 used by the Blue Angels, though I don’t know if any others use this scheme)

Kinja'd!!!

Most of the markings aside from the “2310" are low-vis, which would explain why it looked unmarked.

Can’t tell about your more distant CV-130 photo though.

I believe this is the correct answer.

I was a Marine Corp intel officer, I know what an Apache looks like and I was around Cobras a lot. This was neither, it was all flat all over, nothing sticking out. And it was a light color, all the pics I tried to take just look like a bright smudge.

I found a mention of this a/c over on The War Zone. It’s an MC-130J . This would jibe with my guess of a special ops version of the 130J.

Yeah it’s got all the fuel, sometimes they fill up a chopper or Osprey . I have jumper out of similar planes . I bet a zip gun or two are inside. We had some in the rear mounted on an arm for when the rear deck was down. We sometimes have allies come for games so I was thinking some Canadians or something were here, it looked strange from my angle and the props . The chopper I saw is something fancy too, these must be from NAS Lemore being USMC , I had my first flight physical there, it’s a H ornets nest off I-5.
