I stopped by school today to drop something off, and I discovered that some dingle-berry has been helping themselves to my 3D printers. I hid their prints, and disabled the printers. I have been emailing my principal, and we shall be cross referencing the times that  the files were written to the SD cards, with key card access times.

Whoever this was, they have messed with the wrong shop teacher.

Are they YOUR printers, or do they belong to the school? They’re only starting to become more common in Shop classrooms here, so not many schools have them yet in my area!

They belong to the school, but I am responsible for maintaining them, and the filament comes out of my department's budget.

I don’t blame you for being pissed if it comes out of your department’s budget and they are freeloading off it...

Do any of them have build cameras that would’ve been running or run automatically? Maybe they caught caught the person in question?

Lol! Nope. But if she asked me to print something for her, I would. I've done that for plenty of people.

I grew up with toy guns but I think my parents were a little too lax about it. I think if my kids want a toy gun that’s fine, but they absolutely will abide by real gun rules (i.e. never point at a person, never point at something you don’t intend to shoot, don’t look down the barrel, etc)

Also, you appear to have access to some sort of wood engraving tool and 3D printers...I’m jealous.

Yep, I have five 3D printers, and a laser engraver, to go with my computer lab, and my very well equipped work shop. I'm quite proud of the program we've built here.

We aren’t even allowed to print PAPER without a passcode because of cost restrictions. I can’t imagine how this would go over!

my company has gone 100% over to PullPrint, we can no longer map network printers. You just select the PullPrint queue as your printer, then go up to any printer on the network and scan your badge.

of course I’m pretty sure they keep track of who is printing how much, but nothing has come down the pike “reminding” people of appropriate printer use. Yet.

though those people who run hundreds of pages for stuff for their church might get a talking to sooner or later.  nevermind that “Thou shalt not steal” commandment.

If there were any one tool I think a shop ought to have it would be a CNC router. A friend of mine bought one for his cabinet-making business and it revolutionized his workflow. Being able to drop a single sheet of plywood down and cut all the parts for a Boy Scout chuck box in about ten minutes was amazing. All the boys had to do from there was assemble it.

My high-school Spanish teacher used to “joke” that she “helped” new teachers/assistants/etc. use the copier in order to steal their copier codes. I think she was actually joking, but she did go to lengths to get her handouts, frequently using the mimeograph machine , as obviously there wasn’t any passcode control or quotas enforced on that.

Ah, mimeographs. For some reason I was trusted to use that thing in elementary school. I had a teacher who would let me spend half the day running errands because the rest of my class couldn’t read and it was way more fun f or me to make copies of handouts.

(But yes, copier codes are as valuable as credit card numbers in schools).
