The only thing it needs is a diesel engine out of a W123 240D.

I label you a conformist

Universals are the most sought after fintail variant, and can command real money, although I think in this condition, it might be priced with optimism. They can be rust magnets, so you’d want to go over it with a fine tooth comb. The manuals are also not the most fun (I don’t like column shift manuals in general), so this isn’t a sportster. A good labor of love for the devotee.

Interestingly enough, I knew of one of these locally that was sold about 15 years ago. It was nicer than this, and brought about 20K then - and had a small group of collectors fighting for  it.

I would just use the 300D turbo I5 like mine, it’s still not a beast but it’s a big help on the long highway grades.

Ugghhh fintail wagon, it’s one of the cars I would ditch my W123 sedan for... It has W123 wheels for some reason, I’d go back to center caps for a fintail.

I want it so, so bad. Ultimate shop car for me.

Yeah, I’d ditch the wheels for the color matching center caps, and fix up that ratty interior, but what a sweet car otherwise.

I'd do a 2.1 out of a modern 250 bluetec, if anything. 240s are just so, glacially, painfully slow.

Sadly, it’s no NP - but these are rare and command some $$.

As soon as I saw it on Barn Finds I had to post it here.  So cool, but a CP for me.

Worth it for a rare, interesting and useful version of  an already great car.

Lol that was a joke of course.  The 2.1 would be nice, but adding power would result in required transmission upgrades probably - which in turn means giving up the column shift.

This seems like a CP price to me, but it’s so cool.

Column-shifted manuals haven’t been anyone’s idea of sporty in anything since 1957.

I admittedly have an irrational desire to own an early-60's American big car with a V8 and 3 on the tree, partly stemming from the fact that I’ve never actually driven a column-shifted manual, I’m sure.

I get it now, brown manual diesel wagon... I should have seen that coming. Keep the column shift, we'd just have to enlist RamblinRover to come up with some craziness to make it work with another box. Or maybe it would just work as is, old golden era Benzes like this are so burly that it would probably be just fine if you didn't launch or otherwise drive like an idiot.

If it was nicer, it would actually be worth it, but as I suspect it has unseen issues, I might go with CP as well. This is the kind of car you’d invest 25K in purchase price + 60K in restoration to get 35K-40K in the end on a good day . You’d have to be in love with it.

When I was a teen, one of my dad’s old cars was a 68 Fairlane with a 289 and 3 on the tree. This along with the car being absolute bare-bones zero option spec made me not like the driving experience (for some reason, he loved it, it was a 60K mile 2 owner preservation piece he picked up for a song). A floor shift was possible on a late run fintail like that Universal, and I am surprised it doesn’t have it, but that might have been a market preference.

Dang, I would probably ruin that poor transmission trying to wrangle the RHD column shifter.

Neat car, but at that price, I imagine it would be a very  niche market of buyers.
