Since I see a number of Far Side posts on Oppo, some of you may or may not know, that it is now online.

Yep. Now that there is an official Gary-endorsed website, I may start backing away from my weekly search-looting of Pinterest for Far Side Friday - say to one a week. In Gary’s absence from the web, 98% of his strips have gone on the webs in one way shape or form, uncontrolled, and in the case of Pinterest (one of the centers of it all), they’re being leveraged in a way for money, which is much more of a problem.
So, while I have not been Upload Man and have focused on digging out hidden gems from what other people have put on the webs (including for money, intentionally or not), and while a Far Side posted here isn’t a dollar out of Gary’s pocket per se and maintains exposure, there is now a place to steer people that’s sanctioned.
I kind of wish there was an embed widget to aid *sanctioned* sharing of strips
, though, and Andrews McMeel seems to disavow the “Far Side Clipping on the Fridge” model of success completely by warning in stern terms that you can’t do anything, ANYTHING! with the contents of the website and wrapping the images/etc. up in javascript. Sigh.

I know Larson is fixated on keeping control of his work, but I don’t think his popularity would have been maintained into the next generation without all the sharing, and then there wouldn’t be a far side.com.
I would hate to see Far Side Friday go away, but maybe it could be links to the new material from his website.

Yeah, that’s kind of my take. Andrews McMeel pulling a Daffy isn’t really a way to maintain a fandom.
Kids will pick up the Far Side because they saw a (“bootleg”?) strip somewhere or *maybe* on seeing a collection at a friend’s house, not because somebody bugged them over and over to make a special visit to farside.com. If it’s not in the paper, and papers are dead, then nobody is clipping one to stick on a bulletin board or fridge, which means you’d need to copy it off the internet, which...

I’m just happy to see us all being forced into a formal setting so I can get the TL;DR version of all of the media’s mouthfoaming over the past year, including providing some (allegedly) actual evidence and facts.
