The Ford Ecosport has ASYMMETRICAL taillights! *cringe*

Lets get this out of the way. This is not a good. The driver side taillight has a guitar pick shaped lens intruding on the white part. The passenger side has a hollow area for some reason. Neither look good, but together they are terrible!

Its not just the US market ones either.

Its difficult to see but there is an indent on the right side. The left has what looks like a crack in the lens but it is actually just a separate swoopy section. Maybe a rear fog light? But why just dig a hole in the other one instead of creating a smooth look?

Please, help me to understand!

UPDATE: it’s a door handle for the side opening hatch! *Shudders from pure disgust*

I am letting my hatred of the car get in the way of this clumsy design solution. It’s not boring, but the only reason it exists is for the rear mounted tire that comes on it in other markets.

In the US, there is no tire, therefore no reason for it to exist. Then again, the CR-V I used as an example of the right way hinges for left hand traffic so maybe this is passable? Tell me what you think and how wrong I am.

the right one is the door handle/release. it’s a swing-out door, not a liftgate; grab the handle, press the little black nub with your thumb, open door.

I’m not really seeing what you complaining about? Are you just upset that one has a trunk release which makes them look different?

In this era of dumpy crappy overstyling, this quirk offends me a lot less than many others.  Sit behind a new LR Disco for a view of heavy-handed asymmetry.

I just particularly dislike making you reach into the tail light when the rest of the back is so devoid of detail.

Now that I know what it does, I hate it a little less though.

The chrome / not chrome difference is visible from 100 feet away and it pisses me off. There was a way to do this and have them match, but clearly they went for the cheap route.

I was behind a new Disco recently and marveled at how ridiculously tall it was. I dunno if they had the air suspension set up high or what, but it was towering over everything including an Escalade.

I mean, it’s a practical solution that didn’t require them to add extra feature to the rear... Maybe not the *most* elegant way to do this, but it could be worse.

The tire was available in the US/Canada for the first year only optional on all tri m levels. The take rate wasn't very high.

To me, the Disco looks like a normal Range Rover that was squished both lengthwise and widthwise, and then someone just threw on the license plate area.   Unpretty.

To be honest, o n the list of reasons to not like the Ecosport, this is not particularly high on the list for me. I think it’s actually kind of clever to hide the handle like that.

I mean, I get it, they’re continuing the asymmetry from previous generations, but at this point it’s vestigal.

The Disco 1 & 2 had the asymmetrical rear window because of the rear-mounted spare.

The 3 & 4 maintained this window shape in spite of no longer having the rear-mounted spare.

So now we have...this

I test drove an Ecosport at a dealership to receive my $50 Ford auto show gift card. I wanted to drive something simple that was easy to maneuver. Unlike some other dealers, I actually got the gift card, and it was of great use to me.

It wasn’t bad, but very sparsely equipped.

It’s funny, I don’t mind the asymmetry of the original Disco at all. 1 especially was a functional design, and the way the plate is positioned creates some balance with the unique window shape.   Clever design, like a yin and yang.  The new one, however, is just awkward to my eyes, in stark contrast to the design of big Range Rovers.

You’re right, the whole class is pretty terrible. However, I just hate the half-assed attempt to bring it over here. Slap on a touchscreen, throw the Focus motors in and call it a day.

But..they seem to be selling okay, so maybe Ford knows better than I do.
