Kinja'd!!!

Every time I go near one of those cheap, shitty fluid pumps I swear it’ll be the last. But this time I mean it! After the fiasco that was !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , I’ve decided for the upcoming !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! I want something... better. (Sidenote: WHAT WAS SO WRONG WITH HAVING A DIPSTICK!?)

BUT WHAT SHOULD I BUY! ?

Kinja'd!!!

Not really wanting to spend more than $80 on it, it needs to at least appear to be easy to clean so I can use to do my diffs too, and would be nice if it were usable without a lift. I wouldn’t hate something that I could use as an extractor (though I’ve never had a strong need outside my MightyVac) and a pump, but that is a soft need.

Poking around Amazon there app ear to be a wide variety available, but nothing that catches my eye as good value for money.

This !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! l ooks... ok, even if I have no idea how it works. If I am guessing correctly, I’d say it’ll be an improvement over a leaky oil pump, but only just.

Also it sort of looks like a sex toy, but that is probably a “me” problem.

IIRC my favorite mechanic uses something similar and it seems... OK.

Going up a little bit gets me this !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , which appears to be a modified water filter housing turned into power fill by the magic of... fittings. N ot a terrible option for the price, but the narrow base and general... homebrewness of it makes me nervous.

Kinja'd!!!

This !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! seems to be the most... what I am looking for. At $65 it seems to be the cheapest of this style, reviews well, and I actually understand how it would work. It lacks a ball valve that some of the more expensive units have (but could be added for $10) and only co mes with one “hook,” I’m sure none of which I’d find annoying in the slightest......

Kinja'd!!!

Going up to $80+ opens up a variety of options with more attachments and fittings. All good things, but the prices are getting up there for something I’ll only use twice per year (or so).

Kinja'd!!!

So.... I dunno! I feel like there are better options out there?

Help me Oppo! What do you guys like to use/ recommend ?

Have you considered your torque converter? If it has an external oil cooler, just pop off the lines and put the return in a homers bucket of freshy and the supply in an empty homers bucket then let the TC be the pump.

“Sidenote: WHAT WAS SO WRONG WITH HAVING A DIPSTICK!?”

SO much this.  Toyota removed the dipstick on the A750F 5 speed in my GX.  WHY?!

Interesting idea to keep in my back pocket.  Since I’m having to drop the pan I think that wouldn’t work for the application.

Super frustrating, but it isn’t like it’d be a deal breaker for most buyers so... they get away with it.  Allegedly there is a way to add one to the Discovery, but I haven’t found documentation on it.

makes sense.  Its a pretty common technique on the 80 series, the nice thing is you know you have all fresh stuff in there, not 90% fresh 10% old.

I just bought one of these for gear oil. It didn’t make the job less messy or stinky, but it was way faster and easier on the body.

Not a terrible idea, TBH. Probably spend a day finding the right hoses and fittings, but at least it’d be versatile ...

Sidenote: A loooooooooooong time back you mentioned having regrets about your rock rail supplier.  Can you elaborate?  I’m getting closer to wanting some for the Disco.

it uses standard hose fittings, though I found the plastic tubes that came with my hand pump fit perfectly on the ID of the pump.

Rocky Road outfitters out of Utah.  They are too short, the jig was crooked, the supports are too small, and they want you to drill into your door sill to tie your body and frame together (stupid design).

Ahh ok that is... yeah. George’s Renegade has Rocky Road rails and while they were a pain to install (so many pinch seam holes) they look great and can take a serious beating. I looked into their Discovery ones and they seem pretty straightforward, but attach to the body, not the frame, using existing trim mounting holes . Not sure if that is a problem or not. The frame is extremely inboard on these so anything attaching to it would be awkward.

Still, if their quality varies that much vehicle to vehicle I guess I’ll see what the Disco people recommend.

I have the ABN one, but it’s labeled a different brand.  Works great.  Highly recommend.

Does the dipstick tube still exist? On my Charger the tube is still in place but is plugged. I am able to use 3-4ft white zip ties as a dipstick.

Their newer stuff and their crossover jeep stuff is okay, though their powder coating is totally turning to crap on mine.

Good timing. I need to pick one up. I like the Motive (good experience with their brake bleeder) and the ABN type. I’ll probably get the ABN type.

A bit more expensive and only for occasional use but consider how much you’re saving by doing it yourself.

What about a super cheap amazon diaphragm pump? https://www.amazon.com/Gikfun-Aquarium-Cooled-Diaphragm-EK1856/dp/B0744FWNFR/ref=sr_1_5?crid=OTM0PK7I6R5L&keywords=diaphragm+pump&qid=1576529777&sprefix=DIAPH%2Caps%2C171&sr=8-5

And also some super cheap amazon tubing and just buy whatever fittings you actually need

I’ve never done an ATF fluid change so Idk maybe you need more pressure than that little pump can put out but for 8$...

THIS!

Dodge started doing this on the 6-speed autos. Thankfully Dorman makes a dipstick for them to solve the issue.

Dorman makes a dipstick for them IIRC. I know they make one for the 6-speeds.

Wh en I did the fluid on the C30, I used a hand pump that attached to the bottle of fluid. It was not the best pump and it took a while, but I think it only cost about $8.

Th at motive pump is the one I would buy if you want to spend money. It will be useful for bra kes and power steering pumps as well.

Because it saved them about 12¢ per car, and they got maybe 4 complaints about it.
