Kinja'd!!!

It’s a new better beetle

I dig it. Unique, well-executed, only thing I would do is raise the rear end 1-2 inches.

Nah that’s pretty clean. Needs SSR tail lights though

I'm actually kind of surprised at how clean it looks and how not mismatched the stepside ranger bed looks with the beetle frontend..  it feels more weird than wrong to me.  (full disclosure:  I secretly long for one of those sweet little kei trucks,  so the problem might be on my end..)

I guess the owner didn’t like the S my th design!  The fiberglass step-side bed works surprisingly well but they should’ve gone with the ‘98-’00 or ‘01-’04 tail lights instead of the mid-’90s design with the amber turn signal.

I’m okay with this

Agreed, although the bed may be loaded with something ...

I agree about tail lights.  I think something without the turn signals would work much better..

In all fairness it is more useful than a standard beetle

I know what I hate, and I d on’t hate that.

Back in the day, they used to sell kits to convert proper Beetles into pickups. This is following in that tradition, and probably more functional, too, given the front engine allows a deeper bed.

So is it mostly New Beetle, or Ranger underneath? Probably the latter, as I’m sure it’d be easier to drop a New Beetle cab over the Ranger frame than it would be to join the Ranger bed to the VW’s unibody.

Yeah, u sing the stepside bed here was a smart choic e. A fleetside bed would have made the mismatch more obvious.

This is an interesting question I hadn’t thought about. My asassumption would  be that it’s half a Beetle with a bed and a deeply compromised structure..

Honestly, not that bad. The rear arches feel a little low, but otherwise it doesn’t look like a backyard hack job.

Yeah - how did it get tags? (although they might not have tried to get it inspected as modified). A ladder frame works, unit body construction is much harder.

They did, but only in small quantities to use as utility vehicles around the Wolfsburg factory. Just never mass produced them for some reason.

Probably the only new style beetle I would ever consider driving or be seen in.

I think in Ohio the only thing it'd be inspected on is that you purchased all of your parts, so as long as you had titles and bills of sale for everything, the state would issue a title and plates..

Every state is different. No idea what NY would require. And I’m guessing an inspector in a bad mood might send you back to the ol’ drawing board.

Kinja'd!!! SiennaMan > Steve in Manhattan

Yeah, I could imagine. My first thought hhonestly  was that they had a Beetle with a clean title and decided they wanted something.. different.  If NY doesn't do regular inspections for plate renewals,  this could go as long time without the owner getting on the wrong side of the DMV..
