You Mean It's NOT Supposed to Look Like That?!

My Expedition stalled out over the weekend.

On a hunch (due to previous symptoms), I went ahead and pulled the fuel pump out to discover that it was totally fine!

(If by “totally fine” I mean “holy crap!”)

Thankfully (?), the fuel-level float/sender was apparently shot as well - since even though it read 3/4 full it was actually bone dry.

Except for pieces of the strainer & other crap that most definitely shouldn’t be in a fuel tank ...

As an aside, turns out you can easily replace the fuel pump of an ‘02 Expedition without dropping the tank!

They usally fail when the tank is fill at least on the ones that you have to drop at least.

Had that happen on my 96 suburban, with a 40 gallon tank. It was... heavy and awkward to balance on the jack to lower.

Exactly! That’s why I dreaded having to drop the tank on this one (the “suggested” way) - since I had no reason to question the 3/4 tank statement since I recalled having filled it up prior to parking it.

Having it in the driveway & on an incline - dropping/balancing said tank was a no-go for me. Once I lifted the right-rear tire a bit though (and since I - unbeknownst to me - didn’t have a spare tire in place), I was able to squeeze in above the rear-axle to get it out.

Total time to do it, having never done it before and including some fruitless searching for my rubber mallet (to avoid any sparks) , was about 3 hours.
