I bought a One S last week and signed into it as myself. When I connected to the network and did a bunch of updates it seemed to add a bunch of games that I haven’t purchased. Are these trial versions or are they somehow tied to the previous owner?

Likely stuff that was downloaded by the previous owner.

The games installed are on the Xbox not tied to your gamer tag. Most will probably not launch, unless you have the disc.

With the One S do you have to have a live account? I’ve been thinking about getting an xbox but would pretty much only use it offline for single player games.

Was it used or new?

Used.

So far I’ve played Forza 6 and GTA V and they seem to be working just fine.

They games weren’t actually installed, but showed up as installable. I’ve installed a few (GTA V, Forza 6) and they seem to be playing just fine - no errors or warning messages.

I don’t think you must have a Live account. I only logged in with my Microsoft account. This machine is one with the optical drive, but the games I’ve been installing have been downloads.

Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth.
What the hell does that mean anyway?

I can’t complain, but I don’t know how long it will last or if M$ will somehow start charging me based on the credit card information stored with my account.
Regarding the phrase, that goes back a few centuries. A horse’s teeth change with age, so if someone gave you a free horse you wouldn’t stop to check its age and should just accept it as-is.
