I’m attempting to assist my Brother in-law with replacing his factory 16in wheels on his 2008 238ix with something 17 or 18, preferably in a darker colour (dark grey, gunmetal, black). Anyway, that’s the request from the “client”, but I’m a bit of a noob all things BMW.
so I know I need something 5x120, preferably something OEM, but he’s not opposed to aftermarket. I need a square setup, so nothing staggered from the M-series.
‘08 has TPMS?
Anything I should be avoiding? non-OEM brand wheels needing hubcentric rings etc?
Any non-BMW brands of wheels that I should hunt for, known for being a good fit and quality?

TMPS is freaking expensive. Keep that in mind. I just paid $80 per wheel to get them put on my winter set. And 20 for the tool from amazon and then 20 minutes going through the manual to figure out how to put it in learn mode.

Apex makes great wheels for BMWs.

I chose not to put it on my new wheels, it would’ve been an extra $320 and it’s absolutely not worth it. I can deal with one unimportant dash light for $320.

I believe the sport pack cars had a staggered set up as well, my 328i is like this. I believe all E9X cars had TPMS.

good to know. people are often so vague in their ads, it’ll be nice to be able to rule out a few.

I’ve certainly been factoring it in as a high value add on when comparing one used set to another.

The E9Xs are in junkyards now, might be able to get some rims that way.

Keep it simple and search craigslist/ebay ebay for people getting rid of their oem wheels. This site has specs for all of them so you can see if they fit:

You can probably find some jabroni selling his original wheels from a higher-spec model after putting on $80 Autozone wheels.

I don’t know if this is true for the TPMS sensors on the E90, but my experience with an R56 Mini is that the BMW TPMS sensors aren't, uh, designed for longevity. They die a fast death, sometimes leaking, sometimes not transmitting data, and sometimes both. Ugh.
