I am trying to figure out how to setup my new room and since its unfurnished the world is basically my oyster. Not a particularly large room though so I am trying to thoughtfully plan things out. I do have a lot of outdoor private space on a large balcony though so I will plan out that space as well. I have started above with the desk im thinking about buying. And here below is a quick layout I put together using a website aptly named “floor plan creator”.
I have not taken any measurements so this is likely not really to scale. I think I will go take actual measurements before buying any furniture just to make things exact. My general plan is to put my full sized bed on the right side and then go purchase an L shaped desk of some sort for the left side. I like the idea of being able to look out the window while at my desk. Below are some actual pictures I took of the room:
Yes that is a rockauto box with car parts in that stack. The entirety of that stack is tools, parts, and other car related project things.
The closet is of decent size with dual clothing racks and plenty of space for most of my stuff. There are also shelves above on one side and I plan to add some shelving to the other side. Eventually I will need decoration as well which will consist of some car posters, ski posters, and some trail maps. If anybody has suggestions for desks to look into Im all ears since I am not very creative. Kind of considering a cool pine desk I saw on craigslist but transporting it would be a pain versus amazon straight to the door.
I’m kinda more excited about the outdoor space though. I am in southern california so the whole “seasons” thing doesnt really exist here. So I absolutely will be making use of my balcony. I have a couch at home right now that is a bit ratty and would be perfect for outdoor use. Then I will need a legitimate outdoor patio table and some nice furniture. I forsee myself eating dinner out there quite often and just enjoying the mountain views. While I hope to interact with the other housemates its nice to know that I have quite a bit of truly private space to enjoy as well.
The master bedroom does connect to the balcony as well but he doesnt use it and told me to use the space as I want to. I will just be setting up an area on my half though and leaving the rest as open area.
There are a few things in need of repair (like that screen door) but I hope I can get the owner to help out in getting that done. He seems like a busy guy so I will gladly help out in doing the work to install if he will foot the bill for something like a new door there. Minor things like that and the blinds in my room being a bit janky. Easily fixed though so im not too worried.
So far my only furniture in the room is a lamp that I wasnt using in my current place along with more boxes stacked up in the closet. I wont be moving over the couch and bed for another couple weeks but I would still like to buy the desk asap and get working on my outdoor area. Definitely will need outdoor lighting of some sort, much more lighting for indoors, and plenty of decorations.
But this will surely be the best decoration to have!

my biggest tip: face the PC monitor AWAY from the door.

Whys that? Facing it that way would invariably lead to glare on the screen for sure. Plus it would definitely take up more space that way.

So people don’t see what kind of porn you’re watching, I think was the joke... or, actually, the lifehack really.

Get actual patio seating for the patio. Couches are quite bug and small animal friendly messes waiting to happen. Still in awe how large that deck is compared to indoors space.

Must assert dominance by having it for all to see! But that's also what closing the door is for. Unless one of the housemates needs to get their inner Kramer out I guess!

Well its not designed as a multi unit building so it’s certainly going to have odd quirks like that. Also pretty sure the house was generally built in stages as individual projects so it’s odd all around.
The couch would be quite nice out there and I imagine there's ways to weather proof and make it rodent resistant. The thing is being thrown out otherwise just due to the cosmetic condition of it. A very comfy couch though that I'd love to put to use still. I plan on also getting some patio furniture but since it doesn't rain much at all, a real couch should do fine out there too. I'll have to look into ways to help it survive though.

Well you have the room to do whatever you want out there and more if desired. Privacy plants, dining table and lounge seating, whatever.

I’m going to take a wild guess and say there aren’t any outlets on the patio. So I suggest solar lights. Amazon has solar string type lights, so that might be cool. There's also just solar flood lights galore.

I’m with Nom De Plume on this one. One summer I took a job as the Resident Adviso r for the small group of students who stayed for the summer session. I had to move the entire contents of my dorm room down to the first floor where they housed the residents. I didn’t bother to unpack, choosing to use my couch as my bed for the summer. I awoke the first night to some kind of noise coming from inside the couch. I soon discovered that someone’s pet rat had escaped and took up residence inside my couch when I was moving everything downstairs. I practically destroyed the room and the couch trying to chase him down and catch him. Instead, he made a beeline for the open door. The last time I saw him was bounding across the courtyard, making his way toward freedom.

I’d be concerned about the fact that the balcony faces West and the lights would ideally be mounted under the lip of the roof. So they wouldn’t get much sunlight at all, but I guess I could mount them differently. I had just planned on running a cable on the ground or ceiling out the door. Or doing battery powered since i wouldn’t use them that often. Could do mild solar lighting around the edges.
