Smart COFL knows he needs something with AWD for snow, mild dirt roads, but the interior/handling of a sedan for work reasons.
Dumb COFL wants to spend $5K more on something without AC again.... because...4WD?
Like...I really want a jeep.
Currently, new car will likely occur within Q1 of 2020 (pending any major issues)

J ust had a 2019 crosstrek as a loaner - they are nice. The seats are a little better than our 2016 and the chassis seems a little more solid, though the other interior bits and gauge package seems a half a notch cheaper. Ergo is a bit better - larger range on the telescoping wheel.

How much do you hate sweating your balls off in the Kia?
Now imagine that, but trying to use the excuse that the top comes off, and instead of just being hot, you’ll also be sunburned.
Whatever you choose, get A/C.

Buying a modern vehicle without AC is incredibly stupid (no offense!) . The money you save is lost and then some in resale value, and you have to live without AC. Don’t make the same mistake twice!

what do you have against SC, I have to ask.

As someone who’s had a car with broken A/C p lease don’t buy one without it. If you go Jeep get one with A/C even if that means used. If you think taking the top off will help, you get burned and are hotter sitting in the sun.

But I can fold down the windshield ... so I can arrive to meetings sweaty, dirty, messy and with rock chips out of my face.

How expensive is gas in BC again?
How many Dinos per KM does that Jeep do again. And go for a soft top if you like getting things stolen.

that sghould have been AC....

What about a Grand Cherokee?

Think so? Why?
We already have a AWD Sportwagen, so been there done that. Forester? I would need a 2016 or lower as I won’t buy anything automatic.

High km, but for $3500 why not?
Edit:
Or, for slightly more money, how about a Unimog?

I think Forester went to 2018 with the manual, even in Canada.

Life without ac su cks . I find it essential, especially for defogging. Comfort too, obviously.

Nope, I expect the manual to be completely
extinct by 2025

You're willing to spend 20-30 thousand but won't spring for A/C? Why not get something that's 3-5 years old?

Don’t they make the Altima in AWD now?

Don’t forget he’s in Canada, where A/C is still an option in a LOT of cars. In most of the US, it’s a given.

Purchasing the base model of an already low end car brand new is dumb in my opinion. Extremely low return on the investment.

Well, getting the Kia for so cheap (no ac) allowed me to keep the ST.
Getting a cheap Jeep (no ac) would allow me to keep the fiesta, truck, Sportwagen and have an off-road machine

Imho, Crosstrek is poor on power at least climbing elevations at highway speeds (my right foot literally hurt after a long uphill trying to maintain 80 mph. If you dont need to do this, it really has a nice tight chassis and subie awd is always good. Im no fan of jeep build quality or lousy overall highway ride but surely has more grunt and capability at the expense of comfort.

If he goes with the Unimog, I hope he doesn't have to be anywhere in a hurry.
![]() 12/08/2019 at 00:15 |

I think it works if you drive the wheels off quickly. But if you spent 30k+ miles a year in a vehicle you could never tolerate it without AC, imo.

Quite the opposite; I’d sell the only car I have worth anything, pay off more of our student loans, and bomb around in this:

I'm not sure you can actually buy a car without AC in Australia anymore. It's pretty much standard fitment in anything and everything.
![]() 12/08/2019 at 06:35 |

Wanting a manual does make things complicated, in terms of finding an AWD car. I dislike the Crosstrek because, all things being equal, it’s a lot of money for not a lot of car. The engine is anemic and underpowered even by Subaru standards, the interior is cheap feeling for its price point, and the car overall is loud and uncouth. If it sold for $18 k USD, okay maybe. But at around $25k, I’d rather something that feels like a better place to be.
![]() 12/08/2019 at 06:49 |

Both of those cars pictured seem like terrible options.
![]() 12/08/2019 at 07:45 |

My JK Wrangler in a better trim suggestion also applies, too. 2016 or so with AC and power windows (probably Sahara) should be down to the price of a brand new base one.
It took work to find that haha. I had to Google postal codes for Vancouver so I could have something to put into Autotrader!
![]() 12/08/2019 at 07:57 |

I won’t try to change your mind. Bought a TJ Wrangler myself and love it. The key is having another commuter car for when you need a break from the ride.

I haven’t driven a X-trek yet, but I rented a jeep once. Same thing, wanted awd, jeep was all they had. Was dissapointed, wanted a truck. After a week on the WORST highway conditions I have ever experienced, I feel no shame in saying 10/10 would get the jeep. F ucking incredible, what a machine.

So a Jeep then?
