I don’t know them personally and have never met them, but I hate all these people and I hope all the bad things in life happen to them and only them.
I just watched the ad... it’s a lady and an exercise bike. People seem to be projecting their own insecurities and bullshit into the ad.
Outrage culture at its best, it’s incredible that these fucking cunts can wipe out nearly a billion dollars of stock value over absolutely nothing.
![]() 12/06/2019 at 17:50 |

With all of the free publicity, I’m stunned they lost value. I wouldn’t have known about the ad had media outlets not started covering it.

Jim Spanfeller bought his wife a Peleton

Last I read, their stock actually went up since the commercial aired.
But I do agree, the outrage is unnecessary . Exercise equipment should not be an insult, especially when the couple looks like they probably exercise on their own. What may cross the line, is if he gave her weight loss books. That’s more personal and inferring of an issue that equipment.
I am also basing this completely off my own experiences, though. It’s been hard for me to lose weight since I’ve stopped playing football. My folks sent me weight loss books, and the missus bought an exercise bike. I found the bike to be more supportive and functional than a book on what not to eat.

I thought this would be a boon for the company, too, because of all the exposure. I had no idea Peloton existed until I saw this in my news feed.

I’m offended that you just found out that all these other people are offended so you should be banned.
I’m offended that I wrote that now so I need to be banned.
Oh hell ban everyone.

I thought it was is a dumb product but this is definitely manufactured outrage. On the other hand, I’m very glad we’ve eliminate corruption everywhere, world hunger, and all preventable di seases!

That’s offensive. Take it back or I’ll boycott you.
Wait. I need to know what you do before I can boycott you.

There’s been a lot of these faux outrage campaigns, but this sets some sort of record for “stretching way, way out there to find something to be offended about”.
Maybe the woman wants to add muscle mass and gain weight?
There is SO much projection in this one.
![]() 12/06/2019 at 18:16 |

I do find it creepy.
I also wonder if the ad people did that on purpose hoping for this response, because it’s seriously a lot of free advertising. And knowing about your company but thinking you made one bad ad is a lot better than not knowing about your company at all.

It’s not offensive, it’s just stupid. Lady’s vlogging about a dumb stationary bike as if it was something exciting and cool but nope it’s an exercise bike.

I think the selloff was coming anyway. It went from $22 to $36 in six weeks. I’d have taken some profit, too.

Someone fill me in, as I have no clue what commercial we're talking about.
![]() 12/06/2019 at 19:28 |
|
I betcha that the majority of the outrage is coming from people that:
1) Aren’t in nearly as good shape as the lady in the ad
2) Ain’t got no man that can buy them a $2500 exercise bike
If you see an ad that doesn’t make you want to buy a product, the ad isn’t targeted at you. Simple.
![]() 12/06/2019 at 19:29 |

What I don’t like about the ad, is like isall ad schemes. Ever notice how all breakfast commercials happen in $100k kitchens? Any car commercial is at a million dollar house. All exercise spots have huge dedicated workout rooms in suburban homes. In this ad, she’s perfectly in shape to start with and aparently she is devoid of meaning in life to have such a reaction.
Whatever life they portray isn't even close to anything reality based, not even the wish to be like them. I'm a bike guy, and just dislike the ad in general.
![]() 12/06/2019 at 19:33 |

A lady gets a $2500 exercise bike as a gift , then rides it and takes lots of selfies.
![]() 12/06/2019 at 19:43 |

I mean, I’d be pretty irritated if someone gave me an exercise bike as a gift. But I’d also be pretty irritated if someone surprised me with a Lexus SUV for Christmas too, and those commercials aren’t going anywhere.
![]() 12/06/2019 at 19:49 |

Hmm, so it’s just another annoying commercial with just another narcissistic person in it.
Seems like a typical ad for 2019 to me.
![]() 12/06/2019 at 19:59 |

I read that as “I found the bike to be more supportive and functional than a book
to eat.”
I imagine eating a book might cause some weight loss?

People calling it stupid is fine, but injecting social justice issues where there are none is what bugs me.
![]() 12/06/2019 at 20:03 |

Pretty much. Nobody mentioned who is paying the $40 / month membership fee though.
Upon further review, SoulCycle is around $30 per class. Zwift is another home-based deal, which is between $500 and $1, 200 for a thingy that you attach to your own bicycle, and $15 per month on top of that.
![]() 12/06/2019 at 20:21 |

I’m offended by you being offended about them being offended.
![]() 12/06/2019 at 20:21 |

The only offensive thing about this campaign is thinking the men are stupid enough to buy their wives exercise equipment for Christmas. Hey, while we’re at it, lets take her out to the f anciest restaurant we can find and when the waiter comes we’ll say “She’ll have the salad, don’t need her getting any fatter.”
Explains why we didn’t see the husband again until a year later.
![]() 12/06/2019 at 20:24 |
|
I can see how in a certain context it is offensive, but that context is not necessarily set up in the commercial. In fact, there is no real context at all. At least not enough for the viewer to even really know anything beyond it’s Christmas and a husband gets his wife an overpriced stationary bike.
Ultimately all it really comes down to is a terrible commercial starring an actor who can’t act and has sad/worried eyes and facial expressions
. I only point those out because I think that’s what is causing people to rush to judgement/outrage.

I’d rather have that bike than a Lexus SUV, it’s not even close. I’d be pissed off at anyone who thought they could surprise me with a car that I would want. I’m picking that my own damn self!!
![]() 12/06/2019 at 20:53 |

Exactly! Also I can’t imagine making a Lexus-SUV-sized purchase without discussing the financial aspect of that with a spouse. Ain’t no bootstraps that will ever allow me that level of wealth.

My brother in law is a car guy too. He had a Mini Cooper JCW that he loved, but he wrecked it and had no $$.
I don’t know how it all went down, but his parents bought him a replacement. A Ho nda CRV that *they * chose. He eventually moved to California and traded it for a 2 seat Mini JCW without telling them. He’s in his 40s.
![]() 12/06/2019 at 21:45 |

Well, in this case, it makes some sense. What person that doesn’t have bushel basket s full of money to burn is going to spend $2,500, plus another $500 or so for annual subscription fees, on a bike that you can’t actually ride anywhere?
And it might be more realistic, but car companies probably don’t want to advertise their brand new $50,000 car rolling up to a trailer park, while the impound tow truck sits down the dirt road waiting for them to miss a payment.

We’ve reached a stage in our society where outrage has become the new go-to attitude about myriad things.
Sure, there are plenty of legitimate societal issues that are worthy of outrage. But an innocuous commercial with characters I would certainly not be friends with? I’ll just take a sip of beer and remember that commercials are only 30 seconds long and it’s genuinely no big deal.

Well now I’m going to have to launch a formal complaint about your formal offensive complaint about being offended for offending the offending offenders who were originally offended by the offensive ad.

I think that there is also a tendency for people to view any amount of dislike as “outrage.” All I saw was people complaining on twitter about a goofy commercial. Just saying “this commercial is bad” doesn’t qualify as being offended in my book. Also, Ryan Reynolds found the Peloton actress and put her in a commercial for his gin this week that features her after supposedly breaking up with the guy who bought her the Peloton. That’s not outrage culture, it's marketing.
Exercise bike not included. #AviationGin https://t.co/jYHW74h81l
