We should define stick shift. Do Lenco tranny’s count? Cause Pro Stock cars have been faster that that for years.

Very true.
Personally I don’t count Lencos as a stick shift but to each their own.
Hell the old top fuelers of the late 80s and 90s had more going on than those. Manually locking up the high gear and all that.

Stick in drag racing means uses a clutch for launching and is directly operated by the driver using a single stick. No lencos. Some classes go even further and restrict it to an H-pattern.

He seems like a genuinely cool dude too. Has Cleetus talking about a body for Leroy, so you know its serious
. It’s fun to watch 5 or 6 cars push each other hard. Red De
mon, Minion, IDS 240, Leroy and the Grannas Supra to name a few.

What is Leroy running now? It was sevens-ish last video I saw but it has been awhile.

7.79@186. He has a shop looking at some body panels to clean up the air over the wheels and such.

L iberty Equalizer transmissions are also very popular for drag racing. Unlike Lenc o transmissions they use a single stick to operate the gears. But their shifter ha s a ratcheting mechanism so you only need to pull it back and forth to shift gears up. So it shifts slight ly like a H pattern transmission but the lever’s lateral movement has been automated but the ratcheting mechanism. There’s no easy way to downshift with these as the r at chet ing works only for upshifts.
But this isn’t just a sturdy manual transmission with a weird gear lever. When you are upshifting and engaging the next gear the previous gear is still engaged too . Just moving the lever doesn’t di se n gag e the previous gear like any regular manual does. The dog me cha nism has cuts that enable the transmission to push out and disengage the previous gear when the next is engaged (this function also makes engine braking impossible ) . So t hese can be shifted without lifting the accelerator pedal as the engine speed cannot climb uncontrolled . They also have two layshafts to make them very tough .

That whole second paragraph was great info.
Alw ays wondered how those worked. I assumed it was similar to a lenco.
