It’s that time of the year when Mazdas get lighter and lighter

Stop salting roads. Use the salt money to fun d wi nter driver training programs . Require this training for anyone who drives in winter weather . Sell your stocks in Bondo, Great Stuff, and Rustoleum.

And mandate studded snow tires.
Better than banning them. I’m looking at you Wi!

Remember folks, it’s not just your car the gets fucked up by the salt!
The bridges and infrastructure also get damaged
We need to stop using salt and use CMA instead. It is effective
at the same temperatures as the
salt but does
n’t do all that damage. While CMA costs more than salt, it doesn’
t cost more than salt + the damage it causes

I’d be willing to bet there are lobbies paid by auto manufacturers to push continued use of salt. There’s no money in keeping old cars on the road.

Also the lobby for people who mine and sell salt.

‘Tis the season for fucking insane perfume ads. Seriously. They’re cramming them down our throats and it's all nonsensical garbage.

So much this.

I wouldn’t object to state encouragement of snow tires (but frankly mandating more than having good condition snow rated all seasons goes a bit far in my book) in places that get a lot of snow but making everyone run studs would cost a fortune. Studs do a lot of damage to the road and making everyone use them for 6 months of the year would require a lot of road repairs.

It wouldn’t damage the roads if they are covered in snow.

Studs do too much damage to the roads. Even in WI and MN, the roads aren’t *always* covered in snow
Instead, carry tire chains. Then you can use them only when needed.
And there is a good alternative to salt. It’s called CMA. It works at all the sam
e temperatures as salt but without the damage potential

I especially hate road salt because my usual daily driver is 53 years old, and with an ageing paint job. Winter is pretty, but it sure sucks for classic cars.

even my 20 something car is hating it.

If you have enough snow coverage that the studs don’t touch the road the studs aren’t giving you an advantage over studless tires.

There are a few 3-peak
all-season tires
out now, which legally makes them winter tires under laws where winter tires
are
required. In fact, they are quite popular in those jurisdictions

Studs are really only good under a very narrow set of conditions, mainly ice that is just around freezing point. And they use harder rubber to accommodate
the studs. The only studded tires worth using are from Nokian. They use softer rubber and actually have two different
kinds of studs (inner and outer sections of the tire). The Nokian studs also have a shock absorber cushion built into them, so they do less damage to the roads (but still not zero). But even their non-studded R-series (their current tire is the
R3) are very, very
good
Modern studless tires are essentially always
better. The aforementioned Nokian R3 is better than any studded tire except theirs.
