Today we removed all subjects and put the deposit down on our new place. So it is all official now. Possession is January 18, 2020 , the day after Targa and I’s birthday. She gets a yard and I get a garage.
I am making a “to buy” list of detailing stuff, tools and whatnot that I will need to acquire for my new space.
A big one is a foam gun. I’ve always wanted one, but the water pressure in our current home is very, very low. Anyone have any recommendations?
Two other pieces of equipment are an electric pressure washer and an air compressor. Anyone have recommendations on makes/models for those?
Finally, what other tools or things make your garage better? Room will be...tight with both the truck and Fiesta in there, but there is an alcove for a work area.

You’re getting it in 2019? Congrats on the time travel!

If you’re getting an electric pressure washer, go with the pressure washer foam gun instead of hose pressure foam gun. Cheapest one on ebay or Amazon should be fine, they all pretty much work the same

I believe you said you have an HOA in this new place? Would an air compressor make too much noise? That would be my biggest concern.
Shelving. Can never have enough shelving in a garage. When my wife and I bought our house roughly 10 years ago, I replaced my kitchen. It worked out nice because I was able to mount the old cabinetry and countertop in the corner of the garage.

Oh shit!.
I guess my brain can’t comprehend that it is going to be 2020 soon.

What will you be using the compressor for? My advice is to get the biggest one you can, preferably belt driven so it isn’t super loud.
Or, look into electric power instead of air. I recently gave my old compressor away and I got a little Milwaukee tire inflator which works better than I would have guessed.

There’s shelving in place which is staying! Lots of it. So that’s a huge bonus. The current owners also epoxied the floor!
I just gotta paint the walls.
The HOA (we call them Stratas in Canada) shouldn’t be a concern. It’s not like I am going to be running it day and night. It would be for detailing/tires. Something small likely.

tires/detailing. Just blowing crud out of spaces in cars and topping of tires.

In my country
washing a car with any solvents would definitely be
not okay in that kind of yard placement. The only drain that I see is in the street.
Here we need solvent separating drain if they
are used
. I have no idea what HOA says about these.

I’d get some heavy duty hooks you can screw into studs, to hang heavy items. I have my snow blower up on two hooks when not in use. Also, a work light on a retractable reel. I need this and put one down on my Christmas list.

I don’t have much experience with electric pressure washers other than my brother in law bought a cheap one last year and it broke after 1 use. So get a not as cheap one then? And the air compressor I have is a harbor freight unit I got for free but needs repair. So maybe don’t go that route either.
Having finally set up a workspace for myself after getting a house I will say my favorite things are a good bench vice, drill press, and a rolling tool cabinet. I’ve been working on my cars for years without any of that , but the ability to take a rusty part off a car, hold it securely, and clean it up in a warm and well lit environment is a total game changer .

This was the best tested affordable pressure on Obsessed Garage which has pretty high standards when it comes to detailing stuff. Check out his videos if you want to go down the rabbit hole of “stuff I can’t afford but want SO badly”

yeah ive got a ryobi tire/air mattress inflator that runs off their 18v batteries and it can go from flat to 35 psi in about 5 minutes

I recommend telling your water provider that you live in Cascadia and they can turn up the pressure

Getting rid of the compressor has been great for me. I can do all the things I need with battery powered tools and I don’t have to fuss around with hoses and crap like that.

Our HOA lowers the pressure coming into the development off the city mains. We have...issues with pipes in our places.

I’m not saying that your solution lies in the armed overthrow of the HOA tyrants, but I am not not saying that

I mean, if they cranked up the pressure, our pipes would explode.

I recommend Harbor Freight air compressors. I’ve had mine about three years and use it weekly, never had an issue.
You can get them with the 20% off coupons too.
I would never bother with an electric power washer, I’ve never seen one last more than a year, gas with a Honda engine is the way to go. Way more reliable and up to 4000psi. As others mentioned its a lot better to run a power washer foamer than a hose foamer.
A solid workbench with a vise is essential and can be made yourself with basic tools. I ended up building a tire rack as well. Oh, and a nice shop vac.
Congrats!

Then they would have to replace the pipes with good pipes

Get a good pressure washer,
a good snow foam lance (the Italian PA style with the brass fittings are the best),
wet’dry vacuum cleaner.
If your budget can stretch it, get a good Dual Action polisher and a set of polishing pads.
You don’t need all these, but my kit is pretty much the minimum to keep your car shiny, clean and protected.

They are going to, but I don’t want to pay for that/be here for that.
We paid $20K two years ago in a special levy and I don’t want to pay another.

For a minute I was like “I hate you” out of jealousy, then I remembered that my rent is only $850.
Congrats on the new digs!

Damn! That’s a good price!
We’re going to be super house poor for a long time, but this will be a good spot for us to grow in.
thanks!

If possible, shelves above head level. M y garage has 10 ‘ walls and having shelves at 6' is amazing. It opens up tons of storage space for things you don’t use super often, and keeps floor space at a maximum. I also built a large shelf over the span of the garage door for even more space, and put a couple of left over cabinets in one corner for even more. Then there’ s the tool box.... the theme here is as much well organized storage space as possible.
My other favorite garage items are an overhead air hose real, and lights, lots of lights. I got a bunch of free florescents from work, but as soon as those go it’s LED all the way.
Thick rubber stall mats make a big difference in staying warm in the middle of winter, and if your new garage isn’t insulated, do so.
One smaller item that I find really handy is a floor squeegee .
Also, outlets, outlets everywhere. My garage was unfinished when I bought the house, with only a single wall outlet, I added 11 more and it’s wonderful, power everywhere.

I’ve been using a Harbor Freight 150 psi compressor hooked up to the car battery for tires regularly for 3 years, it’s been perfect and doesn’t take up much space. It also can travel so if you air down tires for off-road shenanigans and then need to air up again, it’s right there.

yeah ive got their chainsaw, weed wacker, and half inch impact gun on my christmas list haha. ryobi makes literally any tool you could ever need that runs off their 18v system haha

For the foam gun, they’re all the same so get a $30 one from your favorite online vendor.
For a pressure washer, I have a cheap (I think it was $70 at lowes) electric one because it’s small and I don’t need crazy pressures. It’s lasted longer than I expected it to, still going strong.
For air compressor, depends on your needs. If it’s just tires and such, a little pancake-style one would be good, but in any case avoid an oil-less one, they’re obnoxious and have very short lives. On the other end of the scale, I have a commercial
60 gallon 5hp ingersol-rand in my garage which can run anything and/or provide enough air to
paint cars.
