The wind.
The fucking wind.
Working on the Landy yesterday it was a pleasant temperature, but 20 MPH wind with much higher gusts.
Today is the same, except colder.
It blows dust, dirt, and leaves into the garage. Into your eyes.
It knocks over your trash can.
It rolls round tools around.
Hell I’ve had a wind gust take out my tool cart once.
It fucking sucks and I think I might just drink and play video games instead.
:puts on wrenching pants:
Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.
Doggos for your time.
What is the worst part about wrenching where you live?

Those dogs are cute!
The worst part is the rust

Oof. Yeah.
I recently bought a car from up north and... yeah screw that. Even if the rust isn’t that bad, every nut and bolt is a chore.

Th e worst part about wrenching for me is that I’ve filled up my garage with metal working tools, tables and saws and I can’t pull my car into the garage. If it rains,I gets wet!

The humidity. Bleh.

Haha I just did a big garage clean to better avoid that scenario.

I live in arizona, so 8 to 9 months of the year if you have to wrench, your basically in hell, even in the garage, with all the fans going, the shade helps but not that much, that being said we have entered the grwat to be in arizona portion of the year

The temperature isn’t too bad for wrenching in the late fall/winter/early spring, but it is very likely to be raining and I don’t have a garage (at least I have a small storage closet outside for convenient access to my tools).

I’m in southwest Missouri, so pretty much the same as OK. Hot and humid in the summer, cold and icy in the winter, and irritating wind all the time. It would be better if my shop was better insulated, but as it is my heater will be struggling this afternoon and I’ll be cold. Still better than wrenching outside in the snow though - which I’ve done.

I did that once, too. I’ve have rule of never owning a car from North of the Mason-Dixon and/or East of the Mississippi . Actually, I’ll rule out any car that has so much as surface rust on suspension fasteners, which means I only own desert cars.

My garage is unfortunately a 2-car when it should be like Jay Lenos garage. Unfortunately, like today, I think I will always have one more car than I have garage spaces for, no matter how big my warehouse.
Seriously though, it’s the cold. Although I’m in Colorado, the cycle of winter days that are nice vs. cold are never consistent so I can’t plan on doing anything in particular on any given day.
And the wind. Out of nowhere it’s 30mph for a half hour in the afternoon. Then fine by dinner time.

Everything I touch on an automobile breaks more. Which.... I have a sinking suspicion *might* not be location specific, but until I have more data I’ll just blame Seattle.

Single detached homes generally haven’t been built in the SF Bay Area for probably decades now . I want a driveway so I can do small jobs in the garage without fighting for a space in the common areas.

I would love to do that, but there still won't be room. I have decisions to make. Keep it a metal shop or get rid of things and make it a garage for car work again. Or rent a bigger space...it's a slippery slope!

The cold. I can usually deal with the heat in the summer but I can not get myself out there in the cold. It’s just too miserable.

winter. just winter.

That blows.

For me it’s the fact that I have nowhere to wrench, other than in the street. Last January I had to do a brake job whilst camped out in the gutter. Street only parking sucks. On the bright side, it wasn’t snowing...
I’ve told my real estate agent that in my next place I want a two-car garage and a basement. Everything else - bathrooms, bedrooms, kitchen etc. - are optional.

Also the wind, except 20mph is a baseline because I’m right on the water.

Cold or heat pick your season

The rust. Everything is rust.
Otherwise, it’s the weather. For two months out of the year it’s 90 degrees and so humid you can’t breathe, and for 6 it’s a frozen hellscape (though heated garage helps with that). The other couple are quite pleasant, though a couple are usually endless rain.

I am in glass all full heaven right now as far as working on cars goes. For the first time in my life I hav e an insulated, heated shop area in my garage.
Not so great on the doggo front as my little gal passed a couple weeks ago. Hurts in ways many don’t seem to understand Saturday rides in the truck were just the best for all involved.

Oklahoma is a rough place to turn a wrench. The worst is when it’s wet and you have to wrench in the rain. The red mud sticks to everything and ends up everywhere. In south Louisiana, it’s hot and muggy in the summer (we have our share of windy days too) and usually wet in the winter.

Can’t you just close the garage door?
![]() 12/01/2019 at 16:29 |

Well with no garage if I work on my own vehicles it’ll be on the street, crawling in the gutter if I have to work underneath. Working on my motorcycle in the rain isn't ideal . But the Saskatchewan winters make things particularly horrible, have you ever replaced a battery or headlights in -40 temperatures? I don’t recommend it.

I just drove through there yesterday on my way back from Texas to Minnesota. Fucking wind murdered my gas mileage.

The dust. If you are leaving anything open, apart or whatever that needs to be scrupulously clean before it goes back together then it must be wrapped in cling film and then covered under a tarpaulin each time you are done with it...

The rust. And the cold. Oh yeah, the rust.

Blame Seattle.
Or yourself but embrace it. Seriously. I’m crap at working on cars and feel like I always make them slightly worse than when I started, but for me it is about learning something and, occasionally , fucking it up so little I can call it a win.

I’ve checked my oil when it was 6 out. Wouldn’t recommend it haha

Garage was built a very long time ago and is very small with no access door that isn’t an automatic garage door. I can barely get the Landy in, let alone have space for staging tools and parts without access to the front. When it gets colder I will, but right now it isn’t worth the effort.
