One of my staff sent an ill-advised email today. His basic point was valid and productive, and I honestly don’t believe he intended it to be as aggressive as it came out, but his EQ is...not the best, sometimes.

The per so n he sent it to apparently took it in the spirit it was intended in, but their manager (who’s at my level in the org) reacted badly and gave my guy a public spanking, cc’ing in the CEO, rather than just forwarding it to me and asking me to add ress my guy’s behaviour .

So instead of just sitti ng my guy down and explaining ( again) about dialing it down in emails sin ce you can’t get non-verbal cues that you’re causing offence, and making him retract, apologise and rep hrase , I’ve got to calm him down about the other manager’s out-of-line behaviour, make it clear to the other manager (who also has the EQ of a cardboard box at t imes) that he’s fucked up as bad as th e original offender and see if I can get him to apologise to my guy (slim to zero chance) , and then deal with one of my best pe ople being demotivated and grumpy for the next few days or weeks rather than this whole thing being a 5 minute flareup . Way to surrender the moral high ground, dude!

Plus I’m now suffici ently pissed about the whole thing I can’t concentrate on the personal stuff I have supposedly taken the aftern oon off to deal with , so I’m crui sing Oppo instead.

Bring on the fricking robots; the sooner I don’t have workmates the happier I’ll be.

Some out of line behavio ur for your time:

In my organization, we’re told to fix things at the lowest level. Company wide shittograms dragging people through the mud are the worst.

Man, I’ve been dealing with the same type of dude for a while at work. Instead of just confronting someone with their behaviour, he always CC’s the manager with his replies, as to correct someone while pointing  his finger and yelling ‘look manager of that guy, your guy sucks at his work and I’m berating him for it, look!’....f*ck that shit.

Haha. I am basically your employee. I had a folder full of draft emails I couldn’t actually send because they were too rude, but at least I got the irritation out by writing them and not sending them.

We had an account manager who was amazing at being super friendly to folks via email that she was a ctually really furious with and I always used her as my example. Like, ok first draft done - now write it how Jessica would write it to a client and you can actually send that one.

In that case you’re not my employee - you stop and think!

I deal with a contractor who’s got it so bad that he never sends an email directly, he sends them all to his office manager (his wife) who either forwards them or tells him to rewrite them. I’ve actually heard her explain to him in so many words that “you can’t call a client a fuckwit, even if they are”.

I eventually learned to stop and think. It took awhile.

That is the way to do it, I have all sorts of long ranty emails in my drafts folder too.  At this point I sometimes start them knowing I will never send, and that it is just a therapeutic exercise.  Others I draft not sure if I will send and I sit on them for a few hours before making the final decision, or send to a neutral co-worker to review first.

I recently discovered that at work I have an email address, but I don’t have access to email, and I’m perfectly ok with this arrangement. People can send me messages, but there’s a less than zero chance that I will ever read them. Any issues need to be handled in person and in real-time. With email there is the possibility of some minor thing festering and getting rehashed seemingly endlessly, but with this arrangement issues are either handled immediately or they’re forgotten, which is a good thing because they probably weren’t worth whining about in the first place.

Between this email thing ( or lack thereof, as it were) and being salaried with paid overtime I feel like I’ve won the lottery...
