A colleague just offered up his XJ with 140k on the clock. It’s a 2000 JGC. There’s some rust but it’s driveable. It’s silver and automatic.. When I asked if he had any idea what it needs to pass inspection he said.

“It will need some work done to exhaust for sure. Last inspection initially had a code pop up during the emissions test, but they cleared it, and rechecked after driving 75 miles and it passed.

Overall: 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Rubber is good. Interior good shape for age of vehicle. Floor panels are fine. Drivers side rocker bar needs replacement. Radiator was replaced in 2018. Needs some body work on rear quarter panel.”

Here are my whys:

I love XJ’s but have never owned one
I love vehicles!
It’s a good car for the winter
It’s a car for $1000!
Cars!!!!
4x4!
I can maybe get my money back?

Here are my why nots:

I have 4 cars, a one lane driveway with a car “tent” at the end and an actual garage offsite.
Insurance
We have two new AWD vehicles
I’m 5 months into a no more cars for a year promise
I am not willing to lose any current cars.

So Oppo, am I buying a running XJ for a grand!?

No. Those trucks are junk. Everyone else will have the opposite opinion.

If the promise is to the wife/ significant other, then keep the promise. It will be far more valuable than any $1000 jeep, which are a dime a dozen.

“I’m 5 months into a no more cars for a year promise

I am not willing to lose any current cars.”

Nope.  Nopenopenope.  If your wife (I’m just assuming that’s who you promised) is anything like mine, this will have long term consequences that are detrimental to the car collecting hobby.

“I’m 5 months into a no more cars for a year promise.”

I guess it depends on how much you care about keeping promises.

I’m assuming you’re only asking us because you’ve already pulled the money out of your bank, right?

No, lol but but I could just sell the guy a little piece of my stock and then he could just “give” me the jeep!

Irking your wife for a beloved yet ubiquitous vehicle? I'm going with "nah"

The promise was to myself, but my wife was within earshot. I mentioned it and she said “It’s cool but where’s it going to go?” I don’t have an answer for that, not a good one anyway.

She asked where it would go, and I don’t have a good answer, so I guess that is my answer:(

Right, it’s almost just like that! Who turns down a free car?

Grand Cherokee is ZJ, not XJ.

edit: actually a 2000 would be a WJ.

Nope, you don’t need more projects, either.

As nice as another project car might sound, don’t be that guy that goes back on his word to his significant other.

The more you know!! A ZJ is also the act of getting oral while you’re asleep, haha.

The problem is that "in the front yard" is probably the honest answer and to normal folks that's the place where a hobby/collection is considered a problem..

Exactly, I’d have to park it on the street which is allowed but I hate doing it. My bosses son is a Mopar mechanic, so I’m waiting to hear back from him to see if he thinks it makes sense as a flip, I’m guessing not.

Why add  something rusty you don’t need? Rust is bad

If it was a Grand cherokee I’d say no but I really like the XJ. Once you go XJ you never go back. It’s such a fun small SUV. They are so nimble and the size it just right to pretty much get yourself into all kinds of trouble.

Yea, it’s not happening. For reasons others have mentioned but mainly because I have 3 cars and piles of parts waiting to go on all 3.

So it is a grand cherokee:( I’m out anyway. Can’t justify it even for a grand.

Gotcha. I would still advise agains t the purchase. Old Jeeps aren’t exactly rare, and as you said, you have two AWD vehicles already. Save the money for something more fun.
