Rear... the HP Elite 8300 had the I/O shield integrated into the original case so no shield here. It also took some cutting of the motherboard tray to get the newer motherboard to fit (originally was a 2nd generation Intel Core 2 Duo)

All sorts of wiring going on here

There’s an SSD in there, somewhere.

This is an ATX adapter required to use these motherboards with traditional ATX power supplies. You must also connect a wire from one of the pins on the white plug to the one of the pins of the CPU fan header to prevent an error on every boot.

Pinout for the power switch + LEDs.

Audio pinout... the original uses th8e old style audio header. Converted it like so, hope this diagram helps someone else in the future. The USB 2.0 header on the original front panel connector is standard.

These Arduino male to female connectors are great for extending short USB/power/audio headers or repurposing proprietary plugs. They’re really handy and you can see them being used in the above pictures for the audio and power headers.

Nice build. I got a PC upgrade myself this week. Actually, I got a new job that included a work PC upgrade. I went from working on “new” 3rd gen Core i5 machine w/8gb ddr3 and integrated graphics at the library (that we upgraded to earlier this year) to working on a 6th gen core i7 w/32gb ddr4 and a Firepro W7100 gpu for the local flood commission. All PCs here are setup to be GIS workstations. It’s a better funded entity than the university library was. Computer hardware, trucks, equipment... all of our stuff is modern. Some of it is even new. And we’ve got toys. In related news, I get to get my FAA drone pilot’s license. Working in a place that goes out and buys the stuff it needs is a new experience.

ho ho, is that some sort of workstation machine? firepros are awesome (and they look dope). actually right now all 3 of my desktops have various firepros (though one is a placeholder until a GTX1070 arrives)

are you real life randy marsh?

Are you interested in GIS or is that just what they build for? I use it regularly as part of my job. I’ve also completed the part 107 requirements as an add-on to my pilot’s certificate. As you can imagine, there’s a lot of overlap.

I will be learning some GIS. It isn’t the main focus of my job, but I’ll be using it some . It looks like they build all the pcs in the department (10 people) as GIS workstations, regardless of who they’re used by . I took the private pilot ground school as an elective my senior year of high school (although never did the flying part, as all my money went to the racecar). That ought to come in handy now as I dust off that part of my brain.

Getting information on how to wire up that PS adapter has made me shy away from the 8300 MB. At this point I choose to run a secondary PS to drive the video card rather than risk blowing up another MB. I still run one 8300 as a Hackintosh, but transferred the guts from the other one to a good Gigabyte board so I can overclock my 3770K.

I got an xw8600 sitting in the closet. Two quad core Xeons and 64GB of ECC. That thing with a 7970 can put out some heat.

Shiny, I’ve been thinking I should do something of this nature with a dual e5-somethingrather Xeon tower, corsair modular liquid cooling & an RTX2080, plus lots of ECC.

I spoiled myself though.  Just ordered a Xeon Thinkpad P1 with most of the things.

it can be done with one of these

https://www.ebay.com/itm/24Pin-to-6Pin-Plastic-ATX-PSU-Power-Supply-Cable-Fit-HP-Z230-Z220-SFF-MainboHFFS/264520850057

IIRC you need to move one or two of the cables on the white connector around... if you want to proceed with this i can take pictures of mine for you
