Its something like $40 for me to get there and get tickets. I have all afternoon with nothing to do and im not super interested in the liberty bell or the art museum.

This boat is the only good form of New Jersey Transit

on the plus side, I would get to go to new Jersey, which is a state I’ve never been.
On the other side, i would have to go to New Jersey.

Yeah it’s pretty neat, although the Camden aquarium might be more your speed
(it’s right next to Big J)
. In Philly for long?

My thought process would be that I’m getting a ticket to daydream about what it would be like to be back then. To see where sailors lived and worked in the heyday of the battleship, and especially to see those huge guns and magazines.
If you go, I’d lo ve to see pics.

I haven’t been so I can’t say for sure, but if it’s anything remotely as good as the USS North Carolina, then absolutely!

Till next tuesday. I’ll have most of Tuesday and most of Tomorrow to dick around town, sat/sun/mon will be worky work time.

Battleships are never NOT worth a visit.
Just don’t let your Uber sit too long in Camden, his rims will be stolen before you finish paying.
/oldie but goodie

im not huge on aquariums, not without kids at least.

H eck yeah, that looks really cool.

Totally worth it. Back when I was a kid, they would let you pay to machine gun some blanks toward Camden.
![]() 11/14/2019 at 13:36 |

Eh, it’s kind of neat if you haven’t toured a Battleship before. Maybe I take it for granted because I live here though?
Trying to think of a different reason for you to visit NJ and I can’t come up with much of anything. And I live in this state.
Gambling isn’t even the draw it used to be because you can always just go to one of the c
asinos around Philly.

We saw her sister-ship USS Missouri at P earl Harbor, absolutely worth it!

Contrary opinion: stay on the good side of the river and visit
Olympia
:
https://www.phillyseaport.org/olympia
The are 7 WWII-era battleships in the world (8 if you want to count
Texas
), 3 of which are basically identical to New Jersey. But where else are you going to see a 19th century cruiser
? It’s a much more unique warship.

Gotcha, yeah it’s not bad. Some cool gadgets to look at on the ship, you can also check out Reading Terminal Market if you don’t want to do the museum thing. Great food and you can even get Boerwors there, Village Whiskey has good burgers and great whiskey selection, Franklin Mortgage is a great cocktail bar, Federal Donuts is also tasty, Swiss Haus Cafe & Pastry Bar has a killer Napoleon pastry that they only sell on Friday’s and it’s normally sold out by the afternoon.
The Mutter Museum is pretty gnarly and interesting
with all their medical displays if you’re into that.

I’m the opposite — aquariums KICK ASS whenever kids aren’t making me skip all the signs and activities :)
I just chaperoned a 3rd grade field trip to the Chattanooga Aquarium, which ha s the world’s largest freshwater aquarium. I’m like “Hey, look at this 14-foot long Sturgeon!” and the kids are like “Yeah, whatever we need to get out because chicken fingers are getting cold.”
“Wow, look at this interactive map about how few Brook Trout are left due to acid rain...”
“I have to poop. Now.”

Seeing as they were pointed at Camden, they probably weren’t.

“First rule of gun safety, kids, every gun is loaded. Second rule of gun safety, never point a gun at anything you’re not willing to kill or destroy. Now that that’s out of the way, point these machine guns at Camden and pull the trigger.”

Most of us from Jersey don’t consider that part of the state ‘ New Jersey’, it’s called ‘ East Phi lthy’ .

As a rider of NJ Transit, can confirm.

Nothing worth seeing in Jersey that is a short trip from Philly. However if one had more time and a mode of transportation:
Delaware Water Gap
Pine Barrens (aka Warton State Forrest, not New Egypt lol)
Island Beach State Park
Either three of those are a great reason to come to Jersey.

It was Camden in the late 90s. They wouldn’t have noticed.

Fair enough. But I wouldn’t want to do it in this crappy 40° weather. Jersey needs to be experienced in the summer.

I think it’s worth it. Pictures don’t g ive you a real feeling for the massiveness of those battleships.

NJ transit is actually quite good. It's faster than driving in most cases. You can take NJ transit from 30th Street Philadelphia to NYC for like $20 and it takes like 90 minutes. That drive (if you happen to ignore the cost of having a car) is easily $20 in tolls alone plus a half tank of gas and with light traffic off hours is easily 2 hours. I'm so used to driving being faster than trains, even with horrendous traffic here in Socal. Yeah if you live out in the sticks or if it snows good fucking luck using the train but at least otherwise it's a viable decent option.
![]() 11/14/2019 at 14:59 |

That is probably the worst part of the entire state haha
![]() 11/14/2019 at 14:59 |

That sounds worse than riding on a battleship tbh
![]() 11/14/2019 at 15:02 |

There’s also a whole naval yard full of mothballed ships in Philly, neat collection of decaying ancient ships just parked there in storage . I have no idea if any of that is tour- able but that would be neat to see somehow.

I've ridden on way too many shitty planes, NJ transit is like luxury in comparison. At least you can brown bag as much liquor as you want on the train and nobody will question your ak47 in your backpack.

I’ve worked as a valet at events on both this and the Olympia, but never been on either because I don’t like small spaces or people. Get back to PA ASAP afterward if you go because Jersey;)
You’ll be within 15 miles of yours truly, but I don’t make it to the city often anymore. For the same reasons I didn’t go on the ships.
CnC has kind of died now that it’s hella cold all of the sudden, but the one right near me is a good one if you’re in over the weekend.

I’m a history dork, Navy Veteran, and rabid player of World of Warships Blitz. I’d say $40 is a good deal, and I definitely would not miss that if I had $40 and time...

Yes, the Olympia is a real gem, a shame she’s been cared for so poorly over the years, but they are trying to gradually set things right. Not just from an engineering or military history perspective either, the amount of craftsmanship that went into utilitarian warships in that era is also impressive.

“ NJ transit is like luxury in comparison”
Do you fly on a lot of eastern European airlines?
![]() 11/15/2019 at 00:11 |
|
Domestic economy in the US is pretty bad on pretty much every airline. But the price is cheap enough that it's worth suffering through for a few hours. The only discomfort I've experienced on a train is just that I can't read or watch a movie since it's way bumpier and gives me motion sickness versus a plane in level flight. Commuting on NJ transit is definitely bad but using it recreationally is fine.
![]() 11/15/2019 at 00:15 |
|
Obviously it's horrid in comparison to any train service in Europe but as far as US rail goes, NJ transit works pretty decently. However, this very much depends on the line and the weather! Hurricane Sandy fucked up NJ transit for a very long time but that wasn't a normal event. I would never consider NJ transit to be GREAT, especially compared to even the worst of transit systems in Europe. But it beats the heck out of metrolink in Socal just due to travel time and routing.
![]() 11/15/2019 at 09:19 |

NJ Transit is the worst system in the US, bar none. I ride this pile of shit system on a semi-daily basis. I now have to leave an hour early EVERY TIME in order to semi-guarantee that I’m actually on time for work, and I’m still late on a regular basis. If it isn’t trains breaking down, they’re being cancelled for “equipment availability” or “Train crew availability” or “Engineer availability” on a daily basis. Best part is when they cancel a train they either tell you 10 minutes after it’s supposed to arrive or 2 minutes before leaving you zero options to try catch an earlier train, but my favorite thing for them to do is to announce that a train is cancelled but then run it anyway because that just is the best. “Is the train really cancelled? Do I chance it and hopefully it’s there or will I end up waiting on the platform for another 40 minutes waiting for the next train?” All of this is on top of all the damage done by Sandy and not even mentioning all the times trains have to single track into NY Penn because a NJT train broke down in the tunnel. Did I also mention that they’re the most expensive transit system in the North East?
Thankfully next month I get to work from home 100% and then next year only need to go into the city maybe twice a month. I am going to drive to Jersey city and take the path for that because NJT can eat a massive bag of dicks.
Edit: I also forgot to mention that when I started my job in 2012 my commute was 1 hour 30 minutes giver or take. It is now 2 hours and 15 minutes...

Not to belabor the point but...
Currently on NJT

I definitely understand your sentiment. Im glad I never relied on NJ transit to get to work. Only really ever used it for travel to NYC or home from college just because parking in Manhattan and the bridge cost makes the train worth dealing with. As much as LA traffic is bothersome now, I don't envy NYC commuter traffic either.
