They found the car abandoned and honed to death. Probably in much worse shape than COFL’s mazda cx-3.
Lets break this down:
1. Lives on a remote county road in northwest Montana
2. Left keys in car, possibly in the ignition.
3. Car was a 2008 Subaru Outback XT with a 5 speed...
4. Doesn’t have comprehensive on car, so likely a total loss of vehicle with no compensation.

this kinda follows the line of thought of if you are doing something illegal you shouldn;t do other illegal stuff. if you aren;t going to cover your car, dont give the keys to the bad guys.

I was curious:
Montana doesn’t really stand out. The Northeast seems to be at the bottom, but there doesn’t seem to be a lot in common beyond that. Doesn’t look like there’s high correlations with density, wealth, political leanings, diversity, etc. Maybe being on the boarder with Mexico (to make getting stolen cars/parts out of the country easier)? That’s a pretty small sample size though.
And of course this doesn’t differentiate between cars stolen and never recovered, and cars stolen for joy rides or use in crimes (though as CoFL showed, you might not want those back either).

Left keys in and didn’t have comprehensive on an very desirable vehicle ...
Two poor decisions makes one bad day.

I’m pretty surprised Hawaii is so high. I mean...how far are you going to get with it?

I think my co-worker is more pissed than he is. She has been telling him not to do this for a long time.

That’s a bummer. I left my keys in my car a few weeks ago. Over night with the windows down
![]() 11/11/2019 at 12:36 |

Confirmed. I have only fake sympathy in this case.

It’s a turbo XT, it won’t get far until the turbo blows pieces into the engine.

Yeah, I assume that mostly joy rides or something. But who knows, maybe it’s expensive enough to import parts that chop shops do a good business.
![]() 11/11/2019 at 12:37 |

I was wondering the same thing. Not much room to run and I don’t remember Hawaii having a reputation for chop shops.

I only have envy — for the thief.
A guy nearby has the same gen XT, totally blacked out and lifted. It is sex.

I’ve lusted over this car before and he doesn’t understand my drooling and unusual knowledge of the cars specifications.

I never leave the keys in my car at home and we have a 200 foot long driveway.

Holy crap, WA is crazy high... I think that’s because our climate allows for lots of old cars to exist, which are easier to steal.

DRIVE IT INTO A VOLCANO
![]() 11/11/2019 at 12:41 |

Clearly he didn’t understand, what with the keys left in there and no insurance to cover.

They are only borrowing cars in HI until they run out of gas.
![]() 11/11/2019 at 12:43 |

That’s a good point. I saw a lot of things street parked in Seattle that would likely be rust if kept outside here in New England (and maybe if kept inside as well).

Impressed car thief knew how to drive manual.
I t doesn’t seem very plausible that a car thief would tho... they normally fail. Seems it may be an insurance fraud. The car is probably parked in a neighbor’s garage....
Did we check the neighbor’s garage?

Quick swoop in while he’s a carless loser and steal his girlfriend too

I’m trying to figure out why AZ is so much lower than I expected.
![]() 11/11/2019 at 12:59 |

The first step of committing insurance fraud usually involves actually having comprehensive insurance.
![]() 11/11/2019 at 13:22 |

unless.... you report car stolen and then realize your coverage does not include car stolen after you left keys in ignition. How do you unwind that situation? Tell the cops oh yeah. I forgot I parked it in my neighbor’s garage? No. you keep on with the lie and then eventually stumble upon it parked on the side street as if someone left it there

I’m not blaming the victim, people shouldn’t steal, but who leaves their keys in the car? They’re going to get locked in there or drain the battery or start a fire or something

Hey now. I’ve been DDing mine for almost 4 years now with no engine or turbo issues. She’ll hold together
(Looking through office window down at car: You hear me baby? Hold together)

You probably take car of your car and use the best oil. I’m not so convinced in this particular case.
![]() 11/11/2019 at 13:39 |

Yeah he doesn’t have loss or theft insurance so it’s gone...

I’d trade my blue and silver ‘05 for a black ‘o8 in a heartbeat. Mechanically they are very similar, but the ‘08 gets the newer grill... DCCD... better radio. And while I’ve grown to actually like my two tone because it’s extra sleeper-y, it was never my first choice. This thief had good taste
![]() 11/11/2019 at 13:46 |

I do, and yeah oil is one of the biggest issues for these cars. I run Rotella T6 with sub 4k oil changes, making sure it’s topped off in between. I removed the banjo bolt screens the day I got the car. I also replaced the ‘05 only catted up pipe with an un-catted STI version that won’t take out my turbo. When I had the exhaust and tune done 2 years ago my mechanic said there was no play in the turbo. I’m at 160k now and hoping I can make it last a while longer. I know it’s just an old Subaru outback but I love it

I feel very bad for him, but also doing a WTF you left your keys in your car dude.

I feel this is a situation where we should blame the victim.... mainly for leaving the key in the ignition.
Not having comprehensive can be understandable if the car isn’t worth anything and the insurance company is asking a lot for comprehensive for one reason or another.
Given it’s a 2008 Outback XT, while it’s worth something, the financial loss won’t be devastating.
Well... all he can do now
is report it stolen to the police and shop for a replacement car.

Guessing
1) high number of 90s japanese cars, due to lack of rust .
2) windows left open due to nice weather
3) shitton of tourists

I have a relative who does this, in addtion to warming up their car for 10 minutes in the winter. To top this off, they used to leave their wallet in and twice had their cash stolen. They give me so much anxiety.

I have a friend in the Seattle area whose first gen Outback was stolen last year, recovered in good conditi
on
nearby
after a couple weeks (she saw it, brought her key, and stole it back), then stolen
again
a year later to the day and again recovered in good condition
a few blocks from her house.

Not devastating, but enough to sting.

someone stole a manual car?
good on them for having the ability to drive manual.
still sucks for the owner though

I think the whole ‘no one (under x age) can drive stick’ is overstated. I run into lots of manual transmission cars/drivers. Certainly enough of them that I don’t think its a theft deterrent.
![]() 11/14/2019 at 15:15 |

you don’t have to lie, you simply ‘do not recall’ where the keys were.

I feel like #2 is not an uncommon thing to do for people with living arrangements as described in #1. Still
dumb.

Lots of older 90s cars on the road, and loads of careless tourists

They live right next to a fairly major county road, however crime is very low in this area. Everyone has guns and generally there is respect for your neighbors.

If you’re an adult with a good driving record there’s no reason no to have full coverage. Especially if you live in rural America where car insurance is cheap.
