I’m not planning on going anywhere unless oppo goes away. I’ll join one of the other contingency plans, but I don’t think drivetribe it is.

I turned into a lurker for a day or two when it seemed like this was closing. Now that’s calmed down, I’m starting to post again.

The only reason for discouraging that is because toy cars=kids, and more than one of us let our kids check LALD out. We all (mostly) talk like sailors in other chats .

Think of the children!  It’s not an uptight thing, it’s because toy cars=kid views, and more than a few LALDers show it to their kiddos. You should see the instagram chats, we more than make up for the lack of on-site swearing ;)

Seems like there’s just too much uncertainty with Kinja at this point. Gawker Gizmodo / Univision / G/O hasn’t ever seemed to recover from the Hulk Hogan suit, and keeps stumbling. I want to keep my hope in Oppo and LaLD staying around fore ver, but the reality is there’s just too much risk. I know Oppo wouldn’t be a good fit on DriveTribe, but LaLD seems to work really well over there.

There are also those of us who will be cross-posting too. We’re not completely giving up on Kinja, but we’re not trusting it to stick around either.

Yeah I just signed up when things here were at their darkest hour, but LALD has had a presence there for awhile so it’s not totally starting fresh. The LALD DriveTribe page has been more active than the Kinja site for a while anyway, I think.   The post writing & photo tools on DT seem pretty good for the review and feature-style posts that are common there, though the format takes some getting used to after so much time here.

Feather s to be ruffled? LaLD was just a more kid-friendly Kinja site given it’s subject matter of toy cars. Quite a few of their regulars would allow their kids on there for that exact reason. But if you start dropping f bombs all over the place, those people aren’t going to want to come back. LaLD is one of the few good diecast sites around. The rest are just a bunch of angry old men trying to rip each other off over $1 toy cars.

Yeah, it’s tenuous, at best. Definitely good to have an exit strategy, but there’s a risk to moving as well - that some won’t follow and/or you end up with a fractured community.

Honestly, I have my doubts about DriveTribe’s longevity as well...

Good for you for holding out! Since we’ve moved out to the country (25 min drive to school), we’ve gotten more permissive of it in the car (used to limit it only to long road trips), but that’s where they get the majority of their screen time most days, so it’s easier to tell them “no” when we’re at home.

Saw a good one the other day:

When I was your age, I had to walk 10 feet through shag carpet to change the TV channel.

Yeah DriveTribe was a great idea, but there wasn’t much keeping many of the tribes going. Seems like there are pockets of users, and I’m willing to bet LaLD will become a giant presence with everyone going over there.

Plus we’ve actually had some guys come back that I haven’t seen in years, which is pretty exciting! I haven’t done a full headcount, but it really seems like just about everyone made the transfer. That’s what having an awesome, tight-knit community will do I guess ;)

I know not everyone will want to follow, which is why we’re not not shuttering the Kinja site. Both will be open. But almost all of our regulars have made the migration already. And we’ve even had a few of our missing OGs pop up again on DT. I’ve got a positive outlook at the moment for the move as a whole.

And as far as DT’s longevity, I’m not too worried. That article is from last year, and a lot has changed over there since. They’ve gotten more investments and are looking to turn a profit for the first time next year. That sort of thing takes a while to do. I work for a software company that has been around for almost two decades now, and we’ve only recently started turning a profit ourselves. The whole “losing money” thing is very misleading. With any business, lots of money has to be spent to get it off the ground and going. And you have to continue that investment as well to make it grow. So truly seeing a profit in any business will take a while when you factor in all the costs. From the activity I’ve seen on DT the last few months that I’ve been on there, I’m not too worried about it.

That’s great that some of the old contributors are back.

I’m not very active on LaLD, but I visit occasionally, and it’s been awesome to watch how it’s grown.

The G/O heads should see the LaLD exodus from Kinja as a huge loss, but they probably have no clue.

We tried holding out as well, but the grandparents decided each kiddo needed their own Amazon Fire Kids tablet or whatever for Christmas last year. Luckily they’ve been limited to road trips or sitting in the lobby while at doctor’s appointments when they have to tag along with me or my wife. They almost never see the light of day in the house.

Man, I haven’t posted to LaLD in a very long time. I haven’t had any updates to post about really, but still....

As far as Oppo goes, I’m in it for the long run. Not really thinking about joining in on Discord, might try Oppo DriveTribe, if that’s a thing. I’m really waiting/hoping somone creates an Oppo with a vBulletin format, but we’ll see what happens.
