Apparently the world ended for a while before un-ending? The current note sounds like “hey FYI things might change” so I’m going to assume it wasn’t worded so well earlier in the day.

The original wording was “bye bye personal blogs” (paraphrased, obviously) and there was no clear indication whether that meant big consolidated blogs like Oppo as well.

Lol, yeah...it's been a complex day. PG wrote us a nice Twitter eulogy

The original message basically said they were deleting everything outside the main G/O pages. Naturally people were quite unhappy.

I don’t twitter but I will assume it’s the typical garbage that comes out of that website

Here’s the original notice from this morning :
I don’t think we’re in the clear yet. Now would be a good time to archive any old posts you don’t want to lose.

Awww, I didn’t know he cared anymore. *sniff*

We got a mention on vice, which was nice.

Note that sometime before PG posted his tweet to Oppo, they removed the “email us” prompt. H onestly given the last situation with email feedback, I’m shocked that anyone thought that would be a good thing to include in the first place.

It didn’t help that they made the notice clear as mud. I know I’m not the only one who contacted them, asking for a more definitive deadline and clarification on what exactly constitutes a “user page”.

Terse.
I’ve been around here long enough to see a lot of “the sky is falling!” blow over, but the way they seem to be prepared to handle shutting down all the minor sites is truly concerning.
Did Oppo go “read-only” at all? If so that seems to suggest it is within their deletion group, otherwise they may just mean personal pages - but it’s hard to say.
I’m confident that most of the folks here would be able to reconvene elsewhere, but it would really be a bummer. As shitty as Kinja can be (I’ve had to refresh pages to see any comments for weeks now) it’s also, as far as I know, the only platform that does the whole “everyone does articles on a blog” with commenting, etc.

I never saw anything go read-only, except for Deadspin. I’ve been able to comment, and publish a post here on Oppo. I didn’t try publishing to my own blog, but others have tried posting on their blogs and succeeded.

I have also watched calmly as people worried that the sky was falling many times, but when I saw that original notice this morning, I lost my shit a bit.

Oppo was never read only, but I tried posting to my personal blog and that worked fine too. I’m guessing they never flipped that switch before they got inundated with emails.

Fair enough. I suppose the fact that the grey box is appearing on the site is probably a pretty good clue that Oppo is included.
