One the biggest takeaways from my time in the Marine Corps was that hope is the first step on the road to disappointment . That said, I see today’s scare and reprieve as probably only a good thing going forward. It has lit a fire under Oppo to figure out post-Kinja Oppo, and through the Discord channel we’ve now got a viable holding pen to keep the band together in a worst-case scenario until Oppo 2.0 is a thing. It looks like most of Oppo’s regulars have joined the channel, so at least there i s a communications medium independent of Kinja should we need it.

This is an interesting byproduct of the internet age. Things are tenuous and you never know when a good thing will go away. We don’t even own things that we have traditionally owned in the past like music and movies. We could have shown up here and just found the place 404’d.
I’m guessing that someone also let them know that if they kill user pages then the commenting structure would take a hit. Loose the community and you loose the ship.

Agreed. We will outlive kinja or take it over one of the 2.
