I hit a mini van that turned in front of me and I T- boned that van to the next state. The older guy driving was on an oxygen mask and really shaken up. He got a ticket for failure to yield and his insurance bought my car. Still a traumatic event and absolutely nothing I could have done to prevent the accident. I even locked up my brakes for 15 feet before hitting the side of his van.

In my experience, it’s usually backed up traffic going my direction that lets a person going the opposite direction turn left through a break when me on my bike am unimpeded in the bike lane that is most dangerous in these situations. Usually as a cyclist you don’t have a great view if traffic is backed up in your direction. I’ve never been hit or hit but had close calls.

That’s an excellent point. Y’know Just the other day, I was waiting to turn left during heavy traffic , and the truck in the near oncoming lane stopped to let me through. Unfortunately, I couldn’t see around him to check traffic approaching in the oncoming curb lane .

I’d seen way too many videos of crashes happening in situations like this, so I just sat there for quite a while until I could be sure that it was clear to go. Sure enough, the first car that appeared didn’t even slow down, nor the one after it. The th ir d one stopped though, and only then did I feel that it was safe to p roceed.
