A wheelchair cannot fit through this space. A person using crutches could not safely pass by. An elderly person should not have to walk across loose stones on a slope (slope not seen well in the photo) to get by a parked pickup truck. This is not even a particularly large truckbed. You may not use the sidewalk, but others do.

I very nearly “accidentally” banged myself/my watch on this truck as I walked by. Please think about how your actions, even actions as small as parking, can affect others.

THIS so much. Th e sidewalk is not a fucking w heel stop. That goes for regular cars too. Know where your bumpers are, both front and rear (also your hitch/winch/snowplow /tire/bosozo ku pipes/ whatever if they stick out more ) .

Yes! I used to live in the apartment building in the lower-left corner here. Traffic turning right at the red light at the green X would ALWAYS barrel across the stop line and into the crosswalk in order to see oncoming traffic to make their right turn. Incredibly dangerous intersection, for both cars and pedestrians.

While I am in vehement agreement with you on this... it's not all about the vehicle or its operator. This a classic example of poor public infrastructure design - one where the design favours vehicles over pedestrians just by the virtue of sheer lazyiness of design.

On a more serious note, that’s not even that bad. With a lot of the boats sold in the 1970s, you could completely block the sidewalk with the massive front or rear overhang they had. Here is a prime example:

That looks dangerous. I bet foot traffic is pretty high at that intersection with the bus stops on 3 corners, too. I have the most close calls where cars are street parked so drivers blow through the crosswalk to see. If you need to pull out more, stop once to look for peds, then another time to look for cars. I’ve started smacking quarter panels of cars that come close enough that I can physically touch them. Open palm to make noise and not cause damage.

Fun fact, m y brother used to live really close to that intersection. Now he is on the other side of the state park

I think most major areas will ticket for blocking the sidewalk in neighborhoods. I don’t think I’ve ever seen this type of sidewalk- blocking in commercial areas receive tickets.

Or it could be backed away from the curb. Or the parking space could have wheel blocks.

As in most cases, t here’s any number of cheap alternatives to not giving a fuck about good urban design!

Yes, this is a parking lot in an industrial park. The sidewalk pictured here runs around the whole loop, which plenty of people who work in this area use to stretch their legs and get some fresh air throughout the day (which is exactly what I was doing) .

W eird. They should have put the sidewalk further outside of the lot and not right on the edge.

I back my truck into every spot I park in and tend to park far from store to avoid hanging out into a lane from parking in a spot that is too short.

That said, I can't say I recall ever parking in a lot with a perimeter sidewalk that is right on the edge of the lot like that.

As others have said, it’s a design issue and it’s a fairly common problem. I see it just about everywhere I go. The lot where I have to park takes it one step further - there are no sidewalks. It maximizes the parking and turns all of the drive lanes into pedestrian lanes too. At least the perimeter of the lot has a sidewalk which is separated from the lot by a fence and some bushes.

This would be less of a problem if it wasn’t a crew-cab. Crew- cab trucks are stupid and unnecessarily impractical.

That said there are many cases where the parking stalls aren’t long enough to fit even my small truck. In that case I would always reverse into a spot because the rear end of my truck is considerably less replaceable  than the front. But yes, I agree. Hanging over the sidewalk is a dick move.

O verhang on most trucks are greater on the rear , especially for full size trucks. T hat’s why a lot of truck owners back in, they can keep sometimes over a foo t of overhang away from the road by backing in.
