They axed it one week before it was to be shown at the 1989 Geneva auto show. There was concern that there would be too much demand for non-M cabrios. If built they’d potentially kill sales of the cash cow top trim 3-series conv ertibles.
The sole prototype was fully functional, and BMW had even decided on an msrp. The design was all but frozen for production. It was squirrelled away in a secret garage afterward and was only shown to the world upon the 25th anniversary of the M5.

Want. Much cooler than its rumored 2020 successor, the X6 M Gran Vert EfficientDynamics iPerformance.

Well at least I didn’t mention making the next M2 a FWD-only 2.0T automatic “Sports Activity Coupe,” right?
That’d be really bad if I mentioned that.

There was concern that there would be too much demand for non-M cabrios, and if they built those it would kill sales of the top trim E30 ‘verts.
Yet somehow today’s BMW has no issues building an X2 and X1 alongside...

Ther e could have been a 5 series convertible? 10/10 would want.
Why do automakers think that convertibles don’t deserve to be a usable size? The Sebring is the only recent convertible I can recall that has a usable b ack seat- aside from that, convertibles are 2-seaters no matter how hard they try to convince you otherwise. Change my mind.

Maybe it was an afte rmarket conversion, this prototype has supposedly been in BMWs private collection since it was built.

You can always go with an S-class convertible. If you can swallow the $134,000 starting MSRP.
Guess us normal folks can only have a convertible if we don’t mind asking friends to saw off their legs to get in back.

I think the most exciting part of this is the idea of a big bad m5 coupe. Fuck the vert.
