Ever wondered what 5 627 hp supercharged LS9 looked and sounded like on one platform?
those outboards are 90 grand...each.

What a hilariously stupid idea. Can’t wait to find a place on the water that will sell you 1700 gallons of 91. I mean...that’s $7,000+ fillups (IF you can find 91 on the water) and you know the range isn’t going to be great.

actually no, this question never came up.

SO. MUCH. WIND. NOISE.

Well, if you look at it this way, there’s almost no chance of being stranded due to engine failure, right? Probably don’t even have to trim much if one conks out.

Safety 1st! The slogan for all hyper wealthy boat buyers.

Spotted this in key west last weekend. Th ought it was a bit insane but now I’ve seen everything.
Those are 4 350 engines.

Whats crazy is how expensive outboards like that are.
Those Verado’s are 27 grand each. Thats 108 grand in outboards on that boat.

Meh. If you have the cash to throw down on a boat like that, you aren’t sweating fill ups. I don’t think it is that hard to find 91 on the water when you are by the ocean in major areas - LA, Miami....
I don’t get the allure of high hp outboards. What is the benefit over a set of triple Mercury Racing 1100's or twin 1650's? W ith the success of Marine Seven, I wouldn’t be surprised by 700hp to 1000hp outboards.
The 557/627 sound like garbage though.

I agree on point 1, more just trying to wrap my mind around pissing away that kind of money on gas.
Point 2 I agree..mostly. Its about layout and outboards have a layout advantage. That being said... I don’t think its worth it, just get a bigger boat for the cost savings of dropping 2 engines off your shopping list.
point 3 - yeah, I mean they want them to be quiet since they will be running 4 grand rpm for hours at a time.

I could see layout for a reason to go outboard. They do free up a lot of space, especially now that they are hang ing them a 1-2' off the stern. Maybe the 1000hp + Merc’s are just that much maintenance intensive? Most outboards are pretty low maintenance but they aren’t anywhere near this hp level.

Child’s play. Kind of crazy that we live in an age where 4 350's isn’t all that impressive anymore. Marine Seven has the edge for multiples and big hp. One of the business case reasons for Marine Seven, when they launched, was for the option to downgrade. Quads to triples without any hp loss, triples to twins, twins to a single, and all the lower maintenance costs that went along with less engines.

Can you really put a price on 1400 hp?

So what is the draw?
There are faster boats right? and bigger boat? Is it actually a thing to have 5 vs 4 ridiculous outboards? What if someone puts 6 on?

Its the mostest of a type...for now

My MIL has one 350 Yamaha(I think) in her center console. That’s gotta be 25k+

the 4.2? hope she does regular maintenance , I hear those first gen yamaha v8's are hit and miss.

It might be. She doesn’t know how to drive it yet in the keys(apparently it’s a different animal down there. Lot’s of things can go wrong) so we didn’t go out. Doesn’t help that we were getting the edge of Gordon too.

They are tuned LSA engines. Not LS9s.
In other news, the Seven engines are now certified for sale in Europe.

My brother works in m arine service . Here’s a video of him filling a boat with $4.49/gal Rec 90 (90 octane, no ethano l).

Yup, you are right, though the difference between the LSa and LS9 is pretty minor, for example the seven marine 627 uses the LS9 cam

Outboards free up a lot of interior room. Easier to service or swap out. Also have a shallower draft.

Didn’t know about the cam.
![]() 09/13/2018 at 14:17 |

I wonder if the shallower draft is due to the lower unit of a stern drive vs the lower unit on an outboard.

In the case of center consoles the inboard options are usually a straight prop and shaft, or IPS drive. Don’t usually see stern drives on those boats.

Salt water and galvanic corrosion are why high hp outboards are a thing. I’ve learned with our boat that outboards are the only correct answer when storing a boat wet long-term. When you’re done for the day and tie up in the slip you can tilt the engines all the way out of the water, which solves the galvanic corrosion problem stern drives always present. After you’ve tilted them up out the water, you can hook up the dock hose to your flush attachment and flush out all the salt water from the cooling engine, which is a very, very good thing.
Just storing our boat in a fresh water slip in New Mexico was a lesson in galvanic corrosion . It took a couple of years to find the combination of the correct material for the sacrificial anodes and correct out drive anti fouling paint to keep it at bay. Salt water makes the galvanic corrosion equation an order of magnitude bigger. Whatever the next boat is someday, it will be outboard powered if we plan to keep it wet.

That is a lot of motor for not very much boat... unless I’ve missed something, it’s just a floating sofa. No cabin below deck or anything. What a waste.
If I have that much power I want it to come with a bed, a head, and a shower.

It does have a head, shower, kitchen and stateroom below the console
But yes, I don’t see the appeal of a certain console yatch .

outboards are nuts. I went to my first and only boat show about 7 years ago. there were 2 boats one 8 0 k, almost the same hull one with 200 with every possible option thrown in with 4 honda outboards. At first I couldn’t figure out how the hell are they so much till i saw each outbaord was list for 15 k! I couldn’t beleive it, you can buy a whole civic for that much.

And they literally are car motors with tweaks. The Civic motor is the 135- 150 h p class motor. https://m.marine.honda.com/outboards/motor-detail/BF135-150
