I can’t seem to shake the notion I want a convertible in the worst way, conflicted is definitely a great adjective. We currently own a 2007 Porsche Cayman, a 2016 Ford Focus Titanium, and a 2018 Tacoma SR5. We’re empty nesters and.. both work from home. I don’t need a fourth car, hell I don’t need a car at all. I certainly can’t justify a convertible living in Seattle, it rains some here..

But the want is s trong cuz I’ve never owned a convertible, my wife grew up driving softops, and I t hink it would be a lot of fun. Also, I can pay cash if I choose to buy one.

That said I need to conserve cash as I have a plan to retire and move to the Caribbean in 2.5 years when I turn 60 . To do this with plenty of cushion I’ll need to save a bit more but I know I can squirrel away enough to meet my goals.

At the end of September we’re going to Belize for a couple of weeks and the prospect of choosing this fine country for a permanent home is quite likely. I may buy an oceanside lo t or home while we’re there, TBD. Whenever we do move I’ll se ll my cars and keep the Taco and then it makes sense to buy a convertible for a fun car. I think I may have talked myself out of buying a convertible for the time being , but every damned day I’m looking at cars online.

Make the Taco a convertible truck!

You don’t increase your number of cars, but now you have a convertible!

You only live once. Buy a Boxster Spyder. Enjoy.

If you own 3 cars and none of them are a race car, then you do in fact need a fourth car. =o)

. . . and Mid Engine should then sell me the Cayman at an Oppo discount . . . I’m currently looking at maybe getting a 987.1.

Ah, separating want from need, a tricky endeavor. The Cayman isn’t a race car but it’s a lot of fun to drive at the limit.

I’ll have to check with Toyota, that may affect the warranty. Brilliant idea sir.

It’s so pretty, though.

987.1's have hit the bottom of the depreciation curve, get one while they’re still cheap.

Isn’t a sports car...? What is a sports car...?

One with an engine replacement by Porsche from a 987.2 just lowered it’s price to where I previously said it would be a good deal.

The same day that I’m leaving town for a week and a half.

It’ll probably be gone when I return. It does seem to be the right time to buy. I missed the window on the C5 Z06, it seems.

sounds like you can spare 4 grand (3k for the car and 1k for maintenance ) and pick up a decent example of a miata (really any year is fine, dont worry about 1990 or 2010 as long as the price / condition is right )

try that out and go from there

And there's the answer to your dilemma.

4 maintenances 4 insurances 4 cleanings

But seriously if you don't track the Cayman but love how it drives trade it for a boxer.

I know, it’s hard enough looking after three vehicles. I do track the Cayman and I’ve also done a ton of upgrades so I’m really not keen on selling it. I did see a few Boxsters for sale locally at attractive prices, but I’m trying to be a responsible adult for once. I’m not enjoying it

Why not sell one of your current cars - like the 911 - and replace it with a different fun car, a convertible?

Also maybe just try your hardest to ignore this urge until your upcoming trip? You’ll get distracted with that and have other things going on/keeping you busy, maybe this urge will kind of just go away then. If it’s still there once you get back and have more info about your land purchase plans, retirement, etc. and are able to swing it, do above?

That’s pretty much the plan, and if I decide to buy property I’ll need some cash on hand to fund it. The Focus is a great car but it’s taken a precipitous drop in valuation, the Tacoma is a lease, and the Porsche is pretty much a family member at this point. I’ll re-evaluate when I come back from our vaca tion.

Toyota may not like it.

Do it after the warrant y ends?

I was kidding, but a very creative idea all the same. I don’t think any manufacturer has made a convertible pick up truck.

I understand. I don’t know any one cool/crazy enough to chop the roof off a new Taco.

However, the SSR, Jeep, FJ40, and older Land Rovers were all convertible...It is not a bad idea if you ask me.
