Went and looked at an Outback that we were interested in, the price was high and we wanted to negotiate on it. The sale sguy said he wouldn’t be able to talk to the finance guy unless we proved we were interested in buying the car by signing a Vehicle Purchase Agreement showing the windows sticker price. I promptly told him where he could stick his purchase agreement and that was the end of things.

Has anyone seen this tactic before? It’s been 6 years since we last bought a car and I was honestly dumbfounded that anyone would try this approach. We still wan t an Outback, but we sure won’t be going through our local Subaru dealer.

Ya nope. That’s like saying “well why don’t you order the fish and then we’ll see if the chef can just change it to steak in the kitchen”

Not that I am a huge fan of it, but if you have a twitter I think this is worth of a corporate name and shame.  Likely corporate customer service will just ask you to PM them, but at the very least someone at that dealer might get an uncomfortable phone call.

it sucks that it’s come to this, but this is what it takes. Taking this a bit further, the best way to handle comcast is putting the issues on social media and tagging them. Their twitter team is responsive and more capable than the customer service number.

Wow. The sad thing is that if this tactic is still used in this day and age, that means it works enough that there are people getting bilked out there.

Then again, maybe it doesn’t work, and this guy and/or his dealership will fade away from natural selection.

I guess my response would be do you want to sell a car or not, because this is how not to sell a car to me. Then if they still insist on this idiotic tactic it’s time to walk.

I haven’t heard that particular line anywhere. That said, I’m surprised they didn’t ask you to sign it before test driving to prove you were a serious buyer...

I once had a finance guy at a car dealership tell me it was impossible to compute my monthly payments until after I had signed a purchase agreement. W e knew what the principal was, and what the interest rate was, and how many payments it was going to be, but the rest was sort of a mathematical black hole, insoluble for mere human brain s; and the computer program that could solve this giant mystery wouldn’t display the desired figure until he clicked the “contract signed” button. So I said “Why don’t you just go ahead and click it then?” and he told me that, if I hadn’t actually signed the contract, it would be illegal for him to do so.

Yeah Twitter used to be the best way to solve problems when things got super bad... but anymore it seems like companies have the same low-level drones manning their twitter teams. Last couple of times I’ve tagged a company they’ve asked me to PM them (of course) then told me to contact customer service.

I’ve seen that tactic before. When I bought my WRX , I negotiated with the sales guy by e-mail and phone. When we had a deal, I drove over to complete the paperwork and pick up the car. I already had financing in place through my bank, so there wasn’t much to discuss .

Wow, seeing this just makes me shake my head. I don’t know how they can continue doing business with tactics like this.

Most of my car deals have been very above board, no pressure sales. Anytime they get goofy, I’m out. I don’t even step foot in a dealership without something on paper via email normally. Ain’t nobody got time for that.

I’m reminded of a time when I was looking to buy a truck many years ago. I had a worthless trade in and I knew it. But the salesman wouldn’t give me the real numbers, purchase price, or what they were giving me on my trade. They would just work the payments. Such BS. Needless to say I left. The salesman, after multiple trips back to the manager, couldn’t seem to get me the numbers I was asking for, so I asked for the keys to my pontential trade in and left.

Yea that’s nuts. I was able to negotiate my Outback without any kind of crazy agreement. I would try another dealer if you really want one.

I’ve been pretty fortunate the last two cars I bought (from the same dealer) , aside from atrocious wait times (they were busy though) . Other than the wait , they didn’t try to dick me on price as both were fair, and they didn’t wiggle but agreed to fix (and signed a document saying so) a couple issues at no addition to the listed price on the one car, and brought up the fact that the other car was CPO which I didn’t know , which made the price great on the other car (was just ‘acceptable leaning towards good’ before) . Went through the usual rigmarole of ‘do you want any of the extra dealer-added stuff?’, but promptly moved on without a second thought when I said ‘no’ to all of it.

Before there were  internet resources, I bought a couple of cars through the Sam’s Club purchase deal. Membership gives you a specific amount over or under (or at) dealer invoice. It may not have been the best deal in all situations, but at least it provided a protocol that cut out all the bull shit. You go in and ask to speak with the Sam’s Club designated salesman (Sam’s club brokers your initial contact) , he shows you the invoice (required to), and you buy the car.

We just purchased from honda and it was simple I test drive a few asked for the out the door price then sent that info and a requ est for out the door price to about 10 dealerships within a couple hundred miles, took the best deal to the deal er of my choice and off we went they matched it with very little hassle. Saved a bunch and got one of the best deals in the state at the dealer I prefer.. good luck but I wouldn't even talk to someone attempting to entrap you in the some sort of weird negotiations.

Buying a car can be such a pain in the butt. It’s annoying. I recently inquired about a price at one dealer and they insist they need my phone number and won’t provide a starting price via email. This was a back and forth over 4 emails. It originally started with the fact they’d send the price if I could provide them more details on the car I was looking for (a car that’s on their lot) , of which I already sent this information to them.

I gave up on the dealer and told them if they can’t be open about what’s priced on their lot than I want no part of their business .

Is that common in motorcycle sales? I have to say, if you weren’t even willing to discuss prices with me without $500 deposit (even if refundable) I’d try to find another place to shop. Discussing price is really part of the process and shouldn’t require a deposit,

Now, a deposit for a test ride, that I could understand.

the boss here h a s had far too many people say ‘whats your best price’ and then go buy somewhere else.

or ‘whats your best price” over the phone. if you cant make the effort to at least come down yourself, why should i bother to help?

its a deterant to stop those from wasting our time. I dont 100% agree with it, but I get his point as well.

Makes sense, I’ve heard that from car dealers. But my response is, what value does the seller/dealer add? If I have selected my purchase, I give any dealer that helped with the selection a chance, but otherwise I’m shopping on price, so, yes, please give me your best price without making me sit there while you come up with it , and if I can get it for cheaper elsewhere, why wouldn’t I do that?

yea, bike dealers not so much.

there is a bit of an issue happening recently. a LOT of the other dealers are selling volume, but they arent making any money so they are closing. if that dealer closes, then who is to blame?

We advertise at MSRP. no added bullshit. here is the price I’m giving to you over the phone.

We are actually kept in the dark about pricing by managment. So I actually cant help on that.

Unfortunately, I think there are way too many people who don’t know that there are different rules for car buying than for  other retail. Fortunately, I also think that pool is shrinking.
