For me it’s the E39 5 Series (and every other BMW of that era).

I just can’t find a single appealing aspect of the E39's design, even in M5 guise. It just looks like a hopelessly-dated, generically-proportioned, boring, uninspiring, unathletic, no-risks-taken, lazy-ass attempt at styling. And yet, you clowns seem to love it.

Now it’s your turn. Which car do you hate that everyone else seems to love?

I would say the Fiat Spider over the Mazda Miata. I thin, the Miata looks so much better tha n the Fiat in my eyes, but everyone seems to love that design.

A lot of German designs seems lazy until you get up close into the details. The E39, to me, is the perfect blend of the 80s’ blandness with the 2000s’ overstyled excess. So that makes it timeless and cross-cultural.

Me: All of the Skylines. Every single one. They all look like modded Sentras to me, until you get to Godzilla, which looks like a G35 with a horrible bodykit. I’d still drive one, just saying.

“Hate” is too strong a word for this, but I don’t love the Jaguar E-Type as much as everyone else seems to. I prefer the Fairlady Z/240Z. Some folks  dismiss it as a mere ripoff of the E-Type, but I really do like the Nissan’s execution of the general shape much better.

The Senna is a weird one. Everyone hated it when they first saw photos. Then it starts to grow on you alarmingly quickly. Then you see it in person and it’s literally impossible to walk away without loving the design.

All modern pony cars. I don’t hate them, but I would never consider one for myself regardless of performance, value, etc... Not my style.

That has always been my appeal to G erman designed cars. They have this effortlessness about them.

One of my favorite details is the curvature of the front fender where it meets the hood line/grill on e30s. It looks like nothing at first, but some designer probably spent a week making all of the radii blend perfectly together.

ND Miata. It’s gross. It has angry eyes, Z4 taillights, an iPad glued to the top of the dash, and no character. It doesn’t look good now, and it won’t ag e any better. It has grown on me precisely 0%. The NC looks worlds better.

Also, pretty much every single design since around 2010. They’re all overstyled monstrosities.

I dislike the 458. I can’t really say why. But when ever I see one or even hear one I just feel meh about them. No angle screams to yes that is an amazing car. I mean I get that is is a good sports car and that is is great for Ferrari to have a “high production rate” vehicle, but just so meh.

Which is funny, because I like the MP4 -12C and everyone says it is a 458 ripoff made by maths, but I think I like the MP4-12C so much because the name is hilarious and mostly because it brought back Mclaren.

I think the only angle where the 458 looks good is from the back.

The front is just a mess. Those grille winglets look like a dorky mustache, and the vents in the headlights make it look like it has axe wounds in its eyes.

The E39 is like the Porsche 993. It takes the classic BMW styling and proportions but updates the surface detailing to a much cleaner level than was happening in the 80s. It’s got modern aerodynamic bumpers and mirrors, but is from before BMW styling went all wild and crazy. That one you posted is very clean looking aside from the mysterious circles in the lower grille. Same applies for the E46 and E38.

But you’re also missing the point that they weren’t trying to make the car pretty at all. McLaren probably doesn’t even care that it’s ugly. It’s pure form over function. Speed and downforce over all else.

And just like the ugly Gumpert Apollo , that makes it damn cool in spite of its ugliness.

I hate most modern Subarus.

Boring to look at, boring to drive, all powered by the same non-turbo 2.5 liter flat four with a hundred-and-who-cares how much horsepower, saddled to CVT. Boring interiors, with chintzy hard plastics and ugly chrome bits.

They just ugly and boring.

I was more joking lol. While I wouldn’t say I love the Miata and I don’t think it’s the holy grail of motoring , I do think it’s a cute little thing.

The only MX-5 I’ve driven is the current gen and I’d totally buy that if I had a new car-sized hole being burned in my purse. My budget places me squarely in NA territory and however pretty much every example around here is peppered in rust. Oof.

Many people praised the Fisker Karma’s looks back when it was new but to me it was (and still is) ugly. The proportions just seem way off and the front end isn’t exactly pretty either.

Haha, I prefer the white one so you can see maximum vents lol. I get it though, its a very polarizing design and I don’t think it would work for any other car, but I think it looks awesome.
