So how long and expensive is the process of getting a license ? Could I do it over a year on weekends or is it more involved?

There are two sets of Federal Aviation Rules under which you can get licensed, part 61 and part 141. The former is less formal, t he latter is more restrictive. https://www.flyingmag.com/pilot-technique/new-pilots/flight-school-part-61-or-part-141

You can take ground school online if you want but I find a classroom environment is more instructive and gives you opportunity to interact with the instructor and other students. That, to me, is just as important as the information you are covering. A formal learning environment with a schedule also provides incentive to complete the class.

Flight training is a bit more flexible. You have to have a minimum of 40 hours in a plane before you can get your certificate, 20 of which must be dual training with an instructor and at least another 10 flying “solo”. Most people take longer. https://www.firstflight.com/private-pilot-requirements/

The costs vary. AOPA says it should cost between $6,000 and $12,000 to complete your flight requirements. I think it will cost me at least $10,000.

You can get a sport pilot certificate for less, but sport pilots are limited to daytime flight and have restrictions on what they can fly. A sport pilot certificate can be converted to a private pilot certificate with additional training.

Your training will take anywhere from several months to a couple of years, depending on your personal pace. If you wait a long time between flight lessons, it will take longer because you have to re-learn things you forgot after the last lesson. If you are more determined, you can do it in a couple of weeks through one of the accelerated programs . Opinions on those programs vary .
