Edit for clarification: these are carbon ceramic, the cracks are normal. Look at the pad itself, it looks to have been overheated for quite some time.
It’s an AMG GT-R. Owner tracks it. Tires are nearly to wear bars at under 2000 miles.

Is that pad material crammed into the holes? Did these brakes get up to track temps, the do an Ice Bucket Challenge?

Sounds like false advertising to me.

So are the rotors subject to overheating, or is it just every other component in the system, including apparently the pads.

They still work great. Just squeak a little every now and then. Which is to be expected. Almost any high performance brake will make noise.

The rotors are fine. And this guy drives it super hard. Totally even wear across all tires, maybe slightly more on the fronts which means he's really caring his speed and not relying on power for fast laps. The fluid and calipers are also fine. The pads are the worst and honestly they're still totally safe and work as they should, so maybe "over"heated was an exaggeration, but they definitely were very hot, as you can see from the coloring on them.

Does Mercedes care that he tracks the car? Or will you tell him to GTFO if he tries to make a warranty claim? (not regarding the brake ‘issue’)

Yeah I could tell that the pads had been overheated, but I was curious what his complaint might be since I know carbon brakes make a shit ton of noise, so that wouldn’t have made its way back to you. Or at least, I hope it wouldn’t.
So what is his complaint?

Apropos of not this article, that scene still gives me same chills as when I watched it the first time.

It depends. It’s more about abuse. And is largely left for us to determine, depending on circumstances of course. If we can’t prove an issue was caused by track time then we'll warranty it. Like how prosecutors must prove guilt, as opposed to defense proving innocence.

It makes more nose than it used to basically.

And they still look better than my neighbor’s Subaru.
His wife complained of a noise when braking. I got nominated to do her brakes. Both rear brakes were using the calipers to stop. The driver’s side had worn almost 1/4" into the caliper.

I think it’s referring to the “high heat dissipation”. That doesn’t look like a pad that’s happy to be in high heat environments.

That looks like a steel rotor to me.

It dissipates heat r ight into the pad!
Actually, considering it looks that way and isn’t disintegrating, I disagree. Normal pads when overheated like that often crack and crumble.

But we all know race car status is about anything functional, it’s all about flash. And noisy brakes is totally pure racecar.
