Guy ran a red lightand turned left in front of me. He confused the green straight light for the turn light. Also has no insrance.

Insurance is mandatory almost everywhere in the states (though the minimums are absurdly low).

That doesn’t mean people don’t drive without it. Normally you need insurance to get registered/inspected, so either they just don’t do that, or they get a plan so that they can do that and then cancel right away. In theory this should be something that’s easy for the police to track down, but in practice I’m not sure there’s much interest. The police would prefer to do something more exciting/profitable, conservatives don’t think the government should be forcing insurance on everyone, and liberals aren’t happy about enforcement that would mainly target the poor.

It is mandatory and the guy even said he just got a ticket the other day for not having it. I have uninsured motorist coverage but all it does is lower my deductible slightly

You should be able to take his car as collateral or something. No insurance means you can’t afford to drive, so it’s yours now. Or something. Even a ghettoed-out gen-1 300 should be worth the several thousand to fix the 6. Please tell me the police got involved.

Ahhhhhhhh I hate those people so so so so much. I see them literally every single day in LA. They are the only people that I regularly honk at and flip off if I can. I’ve successfully played chicken with a few before and gotten them to stop like a dumbass and reverse. I just don’t comprehend why people can’t stop at left turn red lights. Not nearly as many people run reds when it’s straight. For some reason the left turn always gets 3-4 Cars going well after the protected green ends and the opposing traffic already has a green. I understand  it when there is no protected green in a busy area, but otherwise just wait for the next damn light.

I could sue, but if he doesnt have insurance than he does likely doesnt have the money to pay for the repairs. I have uninsured coverage so I’ll just have to p ay a deductible.

Same. He claimed to mistake the straight green light for the turn one. Seemed really apologetic but that doesnt help pay for anything.

I honestly don’t know what I’d do if some dipshit without insurance hit me. Had my head not been busted open, I think I would’ve punched the idiot who turned left in front of my 66 Mustang and totaled it, but it at least was a construction truck and I took my frustration out on his insurance company. Glad you are ok and the car isn’t too bad.

Thanks. Fortunately I keep really calm right after the fact, probably because I’m still shook up from it. No point in yelling or making a big deal when it wont change a thing. Just have to move on and take care of it best I can.
