Kinja'd!!!

A few days ago I posted that my wife had been admitted to the hospital with a lower digestive tract infection. She is still in there. Turns out that the infection had caused a hole in the intestine and that allowed ick to get where it shouldn’t go. She has been on massive antibiotic doses and she isn’t allowed to eat or drink. Her numbers are all trending in a good direction, the doc is pleased, but he said she should expect to be in for the next week at a minimum. Sustenance is through the IV, so they are keeping her hydrated and in calories. I look at it as basically getting stabbed in the gut without the external wound. The positive thing is that in the modern era we can do something about it. Back 100 years ago this probably would have been fatal.

Family is doing fine. I’m keeping the kids rolling along with school stuff and activities. Lots of help on offer from friends and coworkers.

This is the first major health issue for either of us aside from her having the kids. It’s not like t he movies show it with everyone sitting around looking at the heart rate monitor. Mostly it is just boring for everyone, especially her. She is  alert and herself. She hates being in bed this long and would really like a shower. As an engineer I look around the room and am amazed at how we have not come up with better solutions for much of the equipment   Why aren’t the heart rate monitors smaller and use something  like Bluetooth? The IV stand has a shitty base that is hard to move around. Wires and hoses everywhere. Let’s not even get started on the IVs themselves and the damage they do.

I’m trying to figure out how I am going to handle her, the kids and work next week. Work is a distant third on that list. Delta has been fantastic in supporting me. Basically telling me not to worry about anything.

I’m probably going to call the insurance company tomorrow. Might as well as start understanding how that side of things will look.

Anyway, that where things stand.

Thanks for the update. Crappy situation, but I’m glad she’s stable and trending in a good direction. I hope she gets some good books or something to distract her.   Best wishes to you, her, and the rest of your family.

Glad to hear things are improving, and I hope they continue to do so.

I can tell you that innovation in medical electronics is hard because you need FDA sign off on everything (on balance I think this is a very good thing, just look at the Theranos debacle for an example of what can happen if you don’t keep on companies like a hawk). Add to that the fact that this equipment isn’t replaced super frequently, and even when changes are approved, it may take a long time before they are rolled out everywhere, unless they are massive improvements.

Sorry to hear this. Sounds like she’s on the upswing. Take care life is so fragile.

Ps I hear ya on the hospitals. I switched my plan after visiting a buddy in the brand new hospital by me. Night and day difference.

My dad discovered his ulcerative colitis o n vacation at lake Havasu. Hospital, surgery and 2 weeks recovery IN Havasu City starting the first night there...   then months at home. Sounds similar but thankfully milder than a full rupture. Trust me, NO ONE wants to live with a colostomy bag

Diverticulitis? My wife had that- they had to resect 9" of her lower bowel. She’s fine, no lasting effects but she has had to modify her diet . Fortunately hers did not perforate but it came very close.....

Yeah, I imagine it is similar to dealing with the FAA, but even moreso. Still, lots of room for innovation.

Good luck, and hopefully she makes a quick recovery without any lasting problems. I'll keep you both in my thoughts.

I’m so glad to hear things are under control. Being in the hospital for any length of time is so boring.

It sounds like you have a decent support system.  That helps a lot.

Best of luck to her and your family.

As for the equipment, it’s like aviation parts.  If it works, don’t change it.  If you change it, expect years of testing and regulatory approval.

...is it technically an exhaust leak?

It does help a lot. Rachel has a very strong moms  network and they have all been coming by to visit. It keeps her spirits up and that is an important part to a good recovery.

When my wife was having health issues, we really felt the lack of family presence, because we lived 1000 miles  away. The neighborhood is the only safety net you get when that happens. I’m glad you have that, because most people don’t. We can relate.

Thanks, our family is all out of state as well.  We’ve got a great group of friends though.
