I’ve never heard of it and after reading the article I still don’t have a clue what it’s about. Short version?

So, you lay out 12 cards and have to make a 3 card “set”. There are 4 categories (color, number, shape & shade), and each set has to have all three cards the same or all different (per category). If you see one, you yell SET! and take the cards (if you’re wrong, you put them back). You then fill in the 3 cards from the deck and keep playing. Player with the most sets at the end wins.

Short version: every card has 4 attributes, you need to find sets of three where each attribute is either the same on each card or different on each card.
Short version for mathematicians: you find sets which constitute hyperplanes in Z^4 mod 3.
It’s a great game. It’s fast to play, has no player downtime, actually works well with anywhere from two to as many players can fit around the cards, great for any age of player from grade school on up (and young players can be competitive too! It’s humbling to be whupped by a fifth grader), is very fast to set up & clean up, is cheap, packs small, has digital versions, and can be played with players who don’t speak the same language as long as they know the rules.

I love this game and hate how bad I am at it

Gotcha. Definitely seems like it would expose players with terrible pattern recognition.
When I was a kid my father and his best friend often indulged me at small get-togethers with a math game called Krypto . Eventually you get to a point where you call it out before you know the answer, because you’re confident you can solve it.

Haha - I don’t know what it is, but my brain is just made for this game.

Ooh, sound fun. Going to have to see if I can pick that up.
