So I have a buddy’s bachelor party to go to in Vegas in March. I am kind of thinking I might buy a one way ticket, buy a square body Suburban (I have a soft spot for these) or something else that tickles my fancy for like $3k-$5k and drive it back to Wisconsin.
On a scale of 1-10 (1 being “Of course you should do this, why are you even asking”, 10 being “this is dumb, you’ll break down and be murdered by a hitch hiker”) how dumb is this.

-5 Why Haven’t You Already Done This?

8/10. I really want to do this with a friend, realizing it could end in disaster. We decided we’d do it with a fun car that we could re-sell upon return to the rusty northeast. By doing it together, we’d be able to share the misery and costs of ... whatever.
Phase 1: convince wives it’s a good idea
Phase 2: buy plane tickets and/or car
Phase 3: Profit!

10/10 sounds like an amazing idea.
Just remember this advice comes from a multiple 90s Plymouth owner...
![]() 08/23/2018 at 12:15 |

I’m calling it a 2-1/2.
You should definitely do this. It’ll be way cheaper than rust repair, and a helluva story!

So, here’s the thing. This is not really a terrible or risky adventure as adventures go...if you do it right.
Thirty years ago, there would be real risk if you get stuck out in the middle of nowhere and didn’t bona fide survival gear . Now, however, if you go at the right time of year to not have to deal with weather, have a cell phone, A AA or some other motor club, and equip your new ride properly for the wait, the worst you’ll suffer is some inconvenience.
If you have the coin to spare and can locate a good buy, I say do it. You’ll end up with some stories to tell and a fun vehicle.

So, it never gets past Phase 1, does it?
![]() 08/23/2018 at 12:26 |

That’s always the trickiest part isn’t it
![]() 08/23/2018 at 12:27 |
|
Because I haven’t flown to V egas before?
![]() 08/23/2018 at 12:28 |

Yea, that’s why I want to do it. I have always wanted to get a square body, but anything around here is junk

You realize 10 is “you’re going to die” right?
![]() 08/23/2018 at 12:29 |

I don’t know what advice your giving, it sounds you think I should, but you picked the opposite end of the scale, plus you know “90s mopar guy”
![]() 08/23/2018 at 12:30 |

1 /10 great idea
if whatever you find on craigslist doesnt turn out to be an axe murderer it will probably break somewhere miles away from civilization and turn you into a crazed survivor talking to a volleyball you found whilst waiting for any other traffic to come by and rescue you
should make for a great post 2 years from now when the therapy starts to work :)

I think what you meant to say was... BRILLIANT IDEA IS BRILLIANT!!!!!!!!!

This is kind of what I’m thinking, just make sure to have the premiere level AAA before taking this on.

Yes!
I misread your scale, 1/10, DO IT!
![]() 08/23/2018 at 12:32 |

OOPS, misread the scale.

That’s the spirit.
![]() 08/23/2018 at 12:35 |

I’m pretty sure this is both a 1 and 10.
This is a terrible idea, but you know this and are still asking the kings and queens of terrible ideas. S hia L abeouf has the answer you’re looking for.

I’m not sure I’d trust someone for whom 1 out of 10 is the best possible score to drive across country...
Unless you’re a golfer. Are you a golfer?

![]() 08/23/2018 at 12:51 |

Biggest risk I see is really that none of the vehicles you have lined up work out(either deal-breaking issues you find with the cars or just CL people being flakes) and you get hosed on having to buy another one way airline ticket to get home.
![]() 08/23/2018 at 13:00 |
|
I mean it was on a scale of 10 how DUMB is this idea...so 10 would be the highest rating even though the least desirable. I don’t know, I’m not a golfer, that’s just how things rolled out of my mind.
![]() 08/23/2018 at 13:01 |

Oooo...I hope there’s a game while I’m there. That would be fun.

I think if it came to that I would just buy the most reliable car I could find for like $3k and drive it back. I’d probably be able to sell it for a premium being a rust free older car in Wisconsin.

should be plenty, will be regular season then
![]() 08/23/2018 at 13:06 |

Yeah, they really are. Or if you get lucky and find a western/southern one that isn’t junk, they cost a fortune.

I’ll allow it.

Phase 1 is a very tough putt.

I feel like you might be trying to peer pressure me...not sure though

Are you sure your name isn’t Schrödinger? Because this is simultaneously the best and worst idea I’ve seen in a while . Best because it sounds like grand fun AND you hopefully come out of it with a mostly rust- free ‘Burb. Worst because yeah, you’ll probably die in the attempt. So I give it a solid 5.5.
Seriously, driving a ‘Burb from Vegas to Wisconsin, probably taking you through Missouri? You’d better
quadruple check that thing for illicit substances
, because the Highway Patrol will see it as a prime example of “vehicle 99.999% sure to be transporting something illegal
”.

I calls ‘em like I sees ‘em. A good/bad id ea, is a good/bad idea.
![]() 08/23/2018 at 13:59 |

Haven’t tried Phase 1 yet. The prequel is
Phase 0.5:
just to bring it up as an idea that has been had, and would be fun theoretically, like in the future... “but not anytime soon of course”
and then don’t bring it up again for a while.
![]() 08/23/2018 at 14:06 |
|
Fair! Worst case make back what you spent and get an adventure out of it
![]() 08/23/2018 at 15:19 |
|
Yeah. Phase 0.5 so far has netted me nothing but a bunch of sideways/dirty looks in return.

0.50........ this is the only way to go. i always feel bad when my friends throw away perfectly good money on a rental, when you could own something NEARLY as disposable for not much more. its even better if you like what you are going to end up with......
![]() 08/24/2018 at 09:16 |
|
lol that’s probably what I’d get. I already have my truck which netted me many dirty looks primarily due to the timing. She really does like it, I think... She’s driven it which is a big step in the right direction.
At least with the boat, it wasn’t a stretch because a) she loves it and b) the kids do too. Also c) she loves the lake nearly as much as I do. Ordinarily, a big boat purchase can be one of those things, you know?

Man, as cool as old G erman cars are, at least the American iron is cheap to fix if something goes wrong.

Well, this is true. But 560SEL! Something like that would be in my dream garage, just to have one big old German cruiser.

You’re in the northeast right? You front the money and I’ll bring it at least halfway there to Wisconsin.

I can’t begin to describe the look of dismay on my wife’s face, every time the RallyMetro survives another event and makes it back home. This year she planted a container garden, and placed all the plants behind the RallyMetro, to block in from view of the neighbors . When I dragged a ratty/janky ‘87 Honda Helix home this summer to run in this year’s Gambler 500-Illinois, I think the only thing that saved me from being stabbed in the throat, was that it immediately went home with my buddy to live in his garage.
The boat would be a definite no-go, but I prefer to take an occasional ride in somebody else’s boat from time-to-time. Kinda like I enjoy playing with other people’s dogs, but don’t want to own one myself.
