dat ass
Don’t get me wrong, it’s still hideous, but it’s a more modern hideous than whatever the fuck this is:
The fact that these all have cloudy headlamps doesn’t help. Kudos to Chris Bangle, he was ugly ahead of his time.
The A8 and the Jaaaag have aged the best of all the 10-15 year old big luxury sedans.

Disagree. The W220 has aged wonderfully unlike its immediate successor which remains one of the most hideous generations of Benz ever.

Uhhhhhh, no.
![]() 08/22/2018 at 12:02 |

I'll take those style 95's. You can keep the rest.
![]() 08/22/2018 at 12:04 |

Hot take - The W220 always looked like a melted silver turd.
![]() 08/22/2018 at 12:04 |

If I see a W220, I assume it’s with its first or second owner.
If I see an E65, I assume it’s with its sixth or seventh owner, and, judging by the massive, curbed gross aftermarket wheels, not far from the scrapyard.
![]() 08/22/2018 at 12:05 |

No no no. The W220 is the ugliest S class, the W221 is about average.
The W211 E class was pretty good though.

yup yup yup
![]() 08/22/2018 at 12:08 |

The presence of that W220 at a buy here pay here lot makes that questionable.
I think most of these old luxury cars are with their 3rd owners at least. Unless there’s still anyone holding on to the old XJ since the new ones are so different.

This is the right way to do it.

You posted the Bangle Butt but left out the Bangle face
At least they fixed it in the facelift
![]() 08/22/2018 at 12:10 |

The front of the pre-facelift makes me laugh though, just because it’s so silly looking. The W220 just makes me feel sad.

The pre-2003 cars have headlights that looked somewhat cloudy even when new, as xenon was optional, and was a non-projector style . The facelift had a clearer design, and fare better in areas with mild climates.
Both cars now define money pit BHPH luxury (while the Audi and Jag define Russian roulette).
![]() 08/22/2018 at 12:12 |

Agreed on the Audi and Jag, but I’m taking the 220 above the E65 by a factor of two.
Yes, it was bland, but only really in hindsight against Mercedes successive couple of heavily styled generations. At the time, it was a very clean-looking barge. And about 50% of all rap videos agreed!

Fair, maybe they’re both well into several owners, but the E65 owners around here seem to take much worse care of them, not that I see them at all much anymore. When I delivered to mechanics shops I used to see them all the time....
I really don’t care for E65s, I think it’s because they had the nerve to replace the E38 with them.

At 11 years old now, I’d say the LS460 still looks really good.
![]() 08/22/2018 at 13:02 |

I agree, they’ve aged really well.

Looks like a 4-eyed look of disapproval.
![]() 08/22/2018 at 13:09 |

Well they’re meant to age... cab drivers still need to beat the living life out of them after 15 + years.
![]() 08/22/2018 at 13:27 |

Hot take. The pre facelift looks better. It's a design ahead of its time.
![]() 08/22/2018 at 13:35 |

Yea but that’s because it went out of production 20 minutes ago...

They’re both very dated looking - and yeah, the Audi and Jag aged way better, but I wouldn’t touch the the E65 or W220 with a 10 foot pole.
![]() 08/22/2018 at 13:55 |

The only one I’d have is the Jag because it’s the last of the Jags that looks like a Jag before they became boring spaceships.

Post-facelift LS430?
![]() 08/22/2018 at 14:12 |

It has been said, Bangle was ahead of his time. His designs, specifically the “flame” design language under his direction have held up very well.
Everyone hated that 7 series design when it came out, but it has been the best selling 7-series of all time. Still looks fresh to this day. Resale is another issue, but that has more to do with an older German car out of warranty than the design.
![]() 08/22/2018 at 14:56 |

I can’t stand the Bangle Butt. I first saw it on a 6 series and I couldn’t stop being amazed at how absolutely awful it looked. It was like the car was in an accident and it was poorly repaired with a trunk lid from a different car.

shudduppp
![]() 08/22/2018 at 15:04 |

Well. Kinda. The LS430 is a a beaut though for ending production in 2006.
![]() 08/22/2018 at 15:07 |

No. The 140 is the ugliest. Not just S-class. But Benz. Ever. And the worst. In every way possible. So I'll just assume you forgot they exist because they're so bad.
![]() 08/22/2018 at 15:08 |

I still love the look of that generation. Simpl e yet elegant.
![]() 08/22/2018 at 15:10 |
|
Don’
t forget the 2nd generation
LS400. With 17" on it, it is such a great design. For being almost two decades old, it is not bad in the least bit.

The first two gens are classics but the 3rd is my favorite. I still see well kept examples of those ( likely 1 owner) around here occasionally. No mean feat around Chicago.
![]() 08/22/2018 at 15:24 |
|
ToddinTN has a nice black one and then I’ve seen a couple of the green ones running around which are very nice, but second gen is probably my favorite.
![]() 08/22/2018 at 16:37 |
|
There’s a 3rd gen around here that’s dark blue with a beige interior, and I’m tempted to follow the owner home and make him an offer whenever I see it.

The Jag aged the best.

The hottest possible take.
