Kinja'd!!!

I apparently am a man of extremes when it comes to reliability. Also, I drove the Rover two hours home in the dark last night and it was surprisingly confidence inspiring, although quite loud due to the combo of the roof rack and lack of headliner or any ceiling sound deadening .

I haven’t had the chance to take many pics yet or do much getting to know her besides interstate cruising but AMA!

OH YEAH! You are a hero.  Bringing it on the PNW Oppo drive?

Did the guy who sold it to you laugh maniacally when you signed the papers?

Nice! Another RR masochist on Oppo! What year is it? What kindof stuff has been done to it? Obviosuly if you drove it, its in better shape than mine.

Congrats!

Well 1; Congrats! 2, looks like you bought it from a South African by the ZA sticker and 3, it will be more reliable than you expect it to be.

That’s a fantastic two car setup. I love the Range Rover especially in green. Plus I’m a fan of the Tacoma.

It’s a 1990! Not many mods besides the obvious and a F lowmaster exhaust that sounds pretty decent. Oh and some nice lights on the front of the rack. I’m giving it a more thorough going over after work tonight, it seems to be pretty well kept up though there are definitely some bodge jobs. Honestly I bought it for not a whole lot more than the tires and roof rack are worth and I’ve always loved these so figured I’d roll the dice. And anyway, I’ve missed wrenching since dailying a new Taco, so if it ends up being more of a garage toy than a trail toy as intended I can deal.

It seems to have belonged to a South African at some point but I bought it from another car geek in his 20s. Similar story to why I’m buying it, he has a reliable daily and but also likes having a toy around and was just ready to move on to something else .

I’m still not 1000% sure I’m making it(possible labor day weekend family stuff, but if it’s not planned now I’m doubtful it will be) but if I do(and it’s working) of course!!

He actually seemed a little sad to see it go, which I find encouraging

Ni ce! Yeah, mine is definitely in the “ garage toy” category. I’ve done a ton of work to mine since buying it out of a farm field 2 years ago. They’re super cool cars, and even when they piss you off, you can walk 10 feet away and just admire how good looking it is.

Also on part 3, yeah! I did my research and like I know I’ll spend time tinkering but I’m alright with that and pre-P38 they just didn’t have all that much complex stuff to go wrong really. It’s a pretty basic 4x4 and the Rover V8 tooling wasn’t worn out yet

Thanks!! I figure the Rover will be for when the journey is the point of the trip and the Tacoma is for when the destination is the point of the trip.

Buying one of those out of a farm field could be quite the undertaking haha, getting close to roadworthy? What year etc?

And so true, it’s honestly probably my favorite SUV design(between that or the FJ60). The fact that they built it with basically an unchanged design from 1970-1995 without it ever looking dated compared with its contemporaries means they really got it right (think about it. Next to a 1970s Jeep Wagoneer? Looks right. Next to a 1980s Land Cruiser, Montero etc? Looks right. Next to a 1990s XJ/Pathfinder/Explorer? Looks right ). And then it skipped the whole looking dated thing and went straight to being a classic.

Yeah, it basically sat for about 4 years or so in a barn, then another 2 out in the field. The previous owner claimed he would run it periodically, but it was in bad shape when I brought it home. Of course, I didn’t inspect it nearly as well as I should have and ended up having to replacee a lot of the floor due to rust, but she’s all patched up now.

It’s a 1992 County with 136K miles on it. Since I’ve owned it I’ve done the head gaskets, freeze plugs, all suspension components, brakes, and new tires. It also has LED lights all around and an MSD ignition box (which is still being tweaked). I’m in the process now of piecing the interior back together after stripping it for the rust repair. I just replaced the headliner and pretty much just have the back seats and rear carpets to put back in.

Its been a long list of work over the time I’ve owned it, but it’s satisfying to see the progress from what it started as.

That’s sweet! Lots of work but it sounds like there’s a light at the end of the tunnel? LWB it looks like? Mine’s a Country SWB. 190k but it’s always been a driver so almost everything’s been updated at some point .

What did you do for the headliner/what’d it run you if you don’t mind me asking? I didn’t think it would bother me(and cosmetically it doesn’t really) but it was really quite loud on the highway. Otherwise my interior’s pretty much good enough. Driver door card is missing but I’m just going to keep my eyes out for one being parted out with the right color. Can live without it till then

Mine is SWB as well, the LWB didn’t come out until ‘93 I believe. My old headliner was sagging and looked like the inside of a circus tent. I pulled the old board out, and brushed off all the old foam and glue with a stiff brush. I opted for some forest green canvas material to replace it. I got it on Amazon for like $8/yard. I was limited, because I needed 60" wide fabric and most headliner material I could find was 54" and expensive. I’ll post some pics soon as I was gonna do a post about it.

If you’re looking for parts, the forums are good to get decent prices on things. Defendersource.com actually has a good amount of RRC parts that come up for sale pretty often. Its a very active forum with a lot of users and you can get some good info from . R angerovers.net is OK, but has some personalities on it that make it more of a typical forum experience.

Ebay is OK, but prices can be severely inflated depending on how rare they are. You’ll find that these trucks routinely sell for very cheap, but the interior parts go for big $$$.

Nice! I saw that one on craigslist recently. Lack of a headliner was the biggest downside. They're so loud without.

Cool, will keep an eye on them. Problem on the headliner is I don’t even have the board, so that’s not great. Might just have to go without. I’m not super impatient for the door panel either , I was just going to wait till one popped up being parted out on local(ish) craigslist. Lots of Rover people in Seattle and Vancouver, BC. Eventually one with the right interior color will come, maybe I can even score both

Yeah didn’t really realize it was going to be that bad. I got it up to highway-ish speeds on my test drive(roads were like 50) to know it drove fine at speed but the sound difference between 50 and 70 was way worse than I had anticipated. But I mean it’s had an AC delete anyway so for now I’ll need to have the windows down anyway so it doesn’t matter right?

I’m planning to just keep my eye on CL till someone’s parting one out so I can at least get a board, whether or not I need to redo the liner on that .

I would keep an eye out at pick and pull yards so you can get all the hardware, handles, visors, etc

Try these guys. They might have one laying around or might be able to point you in the direction of someone who does.

Thanks! I’m down in Portland a lot to visit family and friends so I’ll give them a shout next time I’m there. There also seems to be a pretty large Rover community in Seattle so hopefully I start meeting some people here too
