I know a few of you guys follow Indycar and already know what’s going on. For those who don’t, there was a giant accident at Pocono on Sunday, and Wickens was helicoptered to a hospital with numerous fractures (both legs or ankles, right arm, thoracic vertebra) .
It shouldn’t really affect me but I’m really struggling to concentrate on work. I keep telling myself that in his condition it’s going to be really hard to analyze the extent of spinal cord damage, especially if he’s been drugged since he accident. “Ok Robbie, wiggle your toes! Oh yeah, your ankle is broken, never mind don’t try that.” But it may turn out to be the worst case scenario.
Sorry guys. Once upon a time I had a similar injury and while I’m totally fine now I guess I’ll never stop replaying the stupid things I did that could’ve changed that (helpful hint, don’t try to walk off a broken back). I’m trying not to fixate on this but my god it’s hard. Save me from myself!

I will tell you right now that you have every reason to be rocked by this if you’ve had anywhere near an experience with spinal shock or possible SCI. Every time I read something like this, I shudder and say fervent silent prayers.
As you know, the extent of functional loss won’t be known until the swelling goes down and things stabilize. He may recover completely, but if there is physical damage to the cord, he will have some sensory and/or motor loss that may or may not be able to be compensated for with therapy. These things are so messy.

As someone who has never experienced a spinal injury, I haven’t been dwelling on it, but I am worried about him. The lack of news, while understandable, is still frustrating. I find myself continually refreshing racer.com looking for updates . I hope this isn’t career ending for him.

I just keep telling myself that he’s in good care but the silence is so frustrating. Even moreso from Hinch - I know he wouldn’t give official updates or anything but the lack of optimism is killing me.

I know. I just hate waiting and that’s really all there is to do. I saw an article where they interviewed a neurosurgeon about it and they guy basically said look, I don’t know any more than you do without actual information.
Soooo I’m stress-eating potato chips and I’ll probably make a tray of brownies. And also I never want to see the video of the car going over Hunter-Reay’s head ever again, while we’re at it.

Have you listened to the Dinner With Racers with Terry Tramel? Indycar has some of the best docs in the business working with them. He has about as good of care as anyone could hope for.

I'm not on Twitter or anything, but I haven't heard hide nor hair from Hinch since the race.

I have no idea how Lehigh Valley hospitals rank though!

I’m from the area and t he one he’s at is highly regarded. I wish him the best.
I was at the race and largely distracted by my tantrum throwing nephew, but I had no idea he had been so badly injured until I got home.

Thank you for the vote of confidence (truly). And yes...I imagine that sort of delay with a little one could get old fast. I was actually stuck in traffic back from the mountains and the race restarted the second I walked in the door. Without the accident I wouldn’t have seen any of it.

Thank you - and man, Schmidt has gotta be feeling this one.

You’re welcome. As soon as I finished it, I knew you needed t o read it. Y eah Schmidt must be a whirl of emotions this week. I like his quote, "I'm sick of our team having to be the most resilient one." I had forgotten his team was running Wheldon at Vegas.

this young man is potentially the next big thing, seems to be a good dude not some self absorbed jerk(tony stewart, brad keselowski), praying he can be whole again for he and his family, if he can return to racing would a bonus

Ugh, his girlfriend posted something today about “he’ll like that when he wakes up in a few days.” Even an induced coma does not fit with the injuries we’ve been told about. I hate waiting.

Yeah, that is worrisome. Although a good friend of mine spent over a week in an induced coma, and made a full recovery. Not that that really means anything, but I'm just trying to stay positive.

I swear I’ve never waited this long for updates. We knew how Jules and Justi n Wilson were doing within hours. We knew right away that Billy Monger was losing his legs. I AM A MILLENNIAL AND THIS IS THE DIGITAL AGE.
My sis said before that there are apparently a number of journalists in the know but no one is releasing anything yet.
I think I’m going to start looking up predictions on whether there will be a midseason F1 driver shuffle to distract myself.

Well, we knew how Jules and Justin were doing quickly, because they were dead. I think the real hold up, is what the family is willing to release.

Latest update from Racer.com
Friday, August 24: IndyCar has provided another update on the recovery of Schmidt Peterson Motorsports driver Robert Wickens from injuries suffered in a crash at Pocono last Sunday.
“Surgeries were performed late this week on his right arm and lower extremities without complication. The extent of the spinal cord injury remains indeterminate,” the statement read. “Wickens also underwent a series of precautionary tests that found no indication of further injury.
“Future treatment for Wickens includes more corrective surgery and rehabilitation. The thoughts of the entire INDYCAR community are with the Wickens family and SPM during this time.”
