Went to the Indycar race. Bunch more pics inside.

Very nice. The one thing I wish we had at the St Pete race is some of the vintage cars on display. Being a temporary street circuit, nothing like that lives permanently at the the track and IndyCar doesn’t bring any with them, though they really should.
So... I guess I’ll ask the inevitable questions ... what was it like in the aftermath of the accident? What did you see? What kind of information did the crowd get about what was going on. I want to say it was about 45 minutes before it was announced on TV that Wickens was “awake and alert.” What was happening at the track?

The vintage cars are maybe my favorite part. Especially the noise from them.
Honestly, I was kind of unaware of the extent of the injuries. I didn’t realize how bad until after I got home. Not sure if they were staying kind of mum about it or I was too distracted trying to keep my maniac nephew occupied.

Not that I have any sway, but I am going to send a nice email to the folks who put on the St Pete race to ask them to think about bringing in some vintage machines, even if just for display (running them on a street circuit with no run-off for 95% of the track would be risky). They could run them up and down the front straight or something.
Back in maybe 2007 or 2008, they brought what they said was one of Massa’s F1 Ferrari from the previous year. It was on display next to an IndyCar so people could see the differences. The thing was, the F1 car was 3/4 scale, had a fiberglass body, and had none of the fine details like winglets or a diffuser. It was like an F1 car built to the regulations with no imagination or innovation (or rule breaking). People were commenting how whimpy the F1 car look compared to the muscle-bound IndyCar next to it. It was kinda sad.
As for Wickens, there was no real information given on TV other than “ awake and alert,” se we knew just as much as y’all at the track did.
I’m assuming you are up to speed on his condition. I really hope that he is able to make a full recovery and get back to racing. But ultimately I’m just glad he’s alive and for all intents and purposes will be ok in the grand scheme of things.
