I just got a submittal that looks like a scan of a fax of a scan from 1983.
In what world did the contractor think this was acceptable?
We live in 2018, all this shit should exist as a pdf somewhere!

At one point, I managed a team at Ford that did a lot of back end paperwork processing. Not a joke, there was a point in 2016 where we pulled out a type writer to finish something that had been faxed about four times already

That hurts my soul

That’s how the contract we used to by our house looked, by the time we were done with.

found a bunch of drawings like that at work the other day
*gets told to fetch the s.o.p and product drawings comes back with several pages of barely legible scribbles and dots*
and on that day we learnt pretty much no one checks s.o.p or drawings and many an ass was chewed
( as of writing still no one checks s.o.p or drawings but we do have shiney new ones you can read now)

About 10 years ago I was walking through the campus at a local big pharma co, walking outside by a pond, when I noticed a fellow hunched over, typing away at an outdoor table.
Nothing unusual... except he was using a typewriter.
I never did figure out what the hell was going on.

Oh man fireproofers... whoa boy. IV make my thumbs tired recounting all the interesting incidents we’ve had with fireproofers.
Good luck, I hope you guys didn’t just buy out the low guy and not budget to spend some of the savings to supplement them.

You’re lucky you’re getting paperwork at all from them... I’d be surprised if they have an office other than the front seat of their truck. Interesting bunch for sure. The price of admission is so low, that almost anyone can spray apply that stuff. Not that it’s done correctly, but it can be applied. Their scope of work is a huge schedule black hole too. Once you give them the floor, you might as well wait till they get done before you send in the other trades. They make a hella mess.

I’m on the Architectural side, these are what the contractor is sending me. This kinda shit just drives me nuts.

Holy shit, that’s no good. I’m on the contracting side. I wouldn’t dream of sending something like that to an AE for approval. I’d dig up the info online to send in a nice PDF. This day and age, there really is no reason not to. But I don’t doubt for a second that the contractor received that submittal just like that from the fireproofers. Those guys are very unsophisticated to say the least.

Well at least it’s easy to reject and send it back to them.

I’ve responded in this manner before.
Not Reviewed: can’t read submittal.
It’s okay, sometimes the vendor has to put forth a wee bit of effort.

Oh, I’m aware. I’m always amazed at how poorly a some groups can do their trades.
The worst so far have been the Pre-engineered Metal Building company we’re working with . I swear that despite being a billion dollar company they are the most inept group of idiots I’ve ever dealt with. They’ve fucked up so many times I’ve lost count.

That documentation is probably available on the internet in PDF, no need to fax it through Somalia
then mail it via pirate ship back to the Ukrane and then send it in a bottle to Georgia to fax to my office.

We literally just called the contractor and said “really... really?... really?!?! Try again”

We didn’t even reject it in writing, we just called the contractor and said “this is unacceptable, try again”

Are you having issues with the home office or the installers? Because the installers can be a real treat too. They are typically not the sharpest of the labor force and can be small two men and a truck type operations.

One of my co-workers wrote WTF all over a rebar shop drawing and it was supposed to mean “
what’s this for?” I LOL’d and sent it back to the contractor.

All of the above.
They made promises they couldn’t keep, drug the schedule 4 months behind, didn’t meet our wind deflection requirements, put us another month behind, framed an opening wrong in the field so we’re having to design a new way to attach a soffit... the list goes on.

Yikes, and those guys are supposed to be the easy trades to work with.

Pro tip: don’t mix us Architects with PEMB companies. We want things done a certain way and they just want to build their shed.

One person at a previous place of employment of mine got called in to HR for responding to an email with “WTF?” His story was that he meant “where’s the facts?” although that was clearly not the case. It’s so common among contractors that I deal with that I have to remember that it doesn’t meet some people’s expectations for professional conduct.

Yep. At some point along the way, one of the fax machines squish ed it to about 1/4 size. You can imagine what it looked like when it got blown back up.

Lol, we actually learned a trick around that in Architecture school. At the end of a project make a large sketch perspective, then scan it and shrink it down to the size of a postcard. Print it on some nice paper, matte and frame it, then give it to the client as a gift “here’s the original concept sketch” .
Since it started bigger, the detail looks great, but you don’t actually have to make it nearly as perfect.
