After a very long time pondering how to do it, 4 or 5 complete re-designs, and a couple of last-minute changes, this evening I finished putting together a hardware storage solution for the garage using a shelf I put up a while ago that happened to be the right size...

Kinja'd!!!

A 6-foot 1x10, 16 feet of 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 x 1/8 aluminum angle stock, and some hardware

That’s 12 removable p la stic bins, each has the usual movable dividers and such. I still need to decide how I’m going to organize the hardware into these bins, and label them so I remember in a week what went where, but anything is better than the stack of boxes taking up a large portion of the workbench at the moment.

Neat! I’m in the midst of a garage reorg. I’ve got old white cabinets that I’m  debating using some left over vinyl wrap to refinish them. Not sure how bright yellow wall cabinets would look, though.

My garage cabinets are some older birch ones I’ve had laying around for a long time, I just put a tung oil finish on them. Looks good, but they are slowly getting dirty and stained - so any sort of easy to wipe clean (of oil, etc) finish may be in your advantage.

This is beautiful. I’d say glue one of each fastener to the outside of the box but I’m guessing each bin has about 25 sepperate sections...

I wonder if I could find the space to build something similar at work.

Ooh, I like that. All packed nice and tightly (hopefully not too tight). Very efficient use of space.

Thanks! I have more pictures from the construction phase if you are looking for more detail to make one of your own.

Each bin has up to 24 compartments, and even then I can identify hardware faster with a label (e.g. “ 1/4-20 x 1" ) than by seeing it. May have to break out the old Dymo label maker. Even then though, what’s where may be in flux as I get new hardware and move stuff around, so maybe not even permanent labels. We’ll see. For now, I want the mountain of mcmaster-carr boxes off my bench!

Mine are some old 50s metal kitchen cabinets. They’ve been painted with w roller a few time...currently they’re white, the original color is pink/coral.

I’m about to move on from the Craftsman bench and get a smaller tool cabinet, and build some folding wall tables. The bench is just a flat surface that collects crap as time goes on.

Thanks! When I was planning it out, I realized if I was very careful, I could get the sixth row in there (originally figured for 5). There’s about 3/32" to spare in each vertical space - just enough to easily get the bins in and out! It did feel kind of silly buying 10 of those bins at the same time (bought 2 for proof of concept, then went back for the rest).

I tend to buy hardware from mcmaster-carr (it’s between work and home for will-call pickup, and cheaper to get 50 real graded bolts there than 5 chinese pot metal ones from lowes) so I have a lot of specific things. I actually am not even sure what all I have - it’ll be fun to go through all the boxes of boxes and find out.

One of these bins will probably end up labelled “Misc” and be the flat plastic equivalent to the coffee can (or as I currently have, a small cardboard box) of random leftovers and crap.

Those are nice, I’d leave them as-is but it’s up to you. Might not be flashy or exciting, but it’s clean and simple.

How are those license plates hung? I have a few I’d like to put up high on the not-really-usable part of the wall above the bench, but don’t really want to make a million holes in the wall.

Most likely, they’ll stay white. I’ll wrap one for fun and see if I like it. I was cleaning today and found the old 3M vinyl and was wondering if I could use it anywhere. I had test wrapped some spare body parts from my old Miata a few years ago. Now, if I had the Miata, and it was wrapped, coordinating cabinets would be kind of cool.

The plates are zip tied together, so I only have them tacked in along the top, every other row of plates. .

My ultimate goal is nothing heavy and stationary on the floor. The bench is the last of the non-mobile item in there. There is a fridge, but it moves easily on its casters.

Nice! I have a little set of plastic drawers for organizing hardware like that. Anything I have a whole box of, I put on a different shelf and just label the box with a big sharpie, organized by type and size.

The plastic bins, I’ve just labeled with a sharpie and if I change what’s in the bin, it rubs off with acetone. A label maker would be better. I try to keep stainless stuff near other stainless stuff, so even if a particular spot isn’t labeled, it’s near the other stainless so I’ll see it when I look in that area.

Nothing is perfect, and it’s always fluid. But man, that looks nice!
