What I don’t know about classic Hoosier automakers could fill several libraries. I never knew this existed. And it turns out there were several different truck models, although the inclusion of the M35 in the Wikipedia article seems suspect.

After Studebaker left the car market, the company didn’t disappear. They diversified, and were involved in the designing of many trucks for the government including postal vans. A M General is one of their sp un off divisions.

If you squint really hard, hey, it’s a PT Cruiser!

For me I’d be hard pressed to decide between that and a Hudson Big Boy.

At least you saw one of the ones with the potion fenders on the bed. Later versions had a fleet side bed using Dodge tooling because Studebaker couldn’t afford to make their own. They were too wide for the cab and looked odd.

That does look very odd.

Sort of. Studebaker sold their medium duty truck & government products business to Kaiser-Jeep in 1962 , which combined it with their existing defense businesses. After Kaiser-Jeep was bought by American Motors in 1970 , their government products business (which included the Studebaker assets) was renamed AM General (American Motors General Products Division).

American Motors was then forced to sell off AM General (by then structured as a subsidiary called AM General Corp.) in 1984 as a result of Renault taking a controlling stake in AMC, since Renault is largely controlled by the French government and the US wouldn’t allow a foreign government to control a defense contractor.
