Remember when Honda engine swaps were a thing?
Any of you with experience in this realm, I have a feasibility question regarding a potential engine swap.
I’m interested in putting a B16a block/GSR head combo into a ‘ 98 Civic HX 5-speed.
1) Is it possible?
2) Is it feasible?
3) Is it doable by a home mechanic in his own garage?
4) Is it relatively inexpensive?

On a level of “ok, fine” to “WTF ARE YOU INSANE?”, where am I at?

I believe the 98 civic is a D series motor, which I assume does not mix with the B series
Edit: I read that as putting a b series head on the hx block.
If the ek is anything like the E.g. than it should work out pretty simply.
You will want to source motor mounts from s pecific models(idk which ones), you’d want the wiring harness and ecu for said motor, but after that it should drop in with minimal problems.(i dont believe it takes any custom work minus some wiring )

Very straightforward. The Si of that generation used a B16A, so it should drop in fine. Maybe just some wiring differences. Though being an HX I believe the car is already wired for VTEC.
I swapped a JDM H23 VTEC into my 5th gen Prelude a few years ago, did it all at home. Mainly just me and my dad, though we did have some help for the more intricate parts.

Awesome, thank you!

I f my classmates in high school could get their swaps up and running in a weekend, I’m sure it can’t be that hard.

If you can find a b18 block from an LS non vtec integra and mate it to that GSR head you’ll have considerably more torque than even the GSR, while retaining all of the benefits of the VTEC b18.
Just in the event you happen to be considering any other options.
Also, with a mount kit an h22 will slide right on in there, if you’re so inclined. Which is the way I’d personally go if I were doing it and was planning to stay NA.

My goal in this whole endeavor is to take a non-running car and make a running one, preferably as a long-term learning project to get my boys turning some wrenches. Performance is not so much a factor as cost.
That said, nothing wrong with planning ahead for upgrades!
At any rate, I’m just spitballing right now. I used to know more about the Accord platform, but never delved into what’s possible w/ a Civic.

Oh, I just thought about it, you may need a B-series transmission. I’m not sure if the B and D transmissions are compatible like the H and F ones are in the Accord/Prelude. Definitely something to look up before you pull the trigger.

Good call, thank you!

You are ok, fine here. You will need to source a set of 99 Civic SI mounts, and the transmission. Some of the B-Series transmissions are cable shifter rather than a traditional linkage like in the 6th gen Civics. Your current harness will swap over and you should only have to change the ECU.
Pretty much any Honda 4 or 6 cyl will fit in these cars and the mounts are readily available. I have pretty much the same car, but mine’s a 96 and stock except wheels. Too bad that thing doesn’t have the stock HX wheels, they are very light Enkeis.
They are about the easiest car to do major work on. If you ever wanted to do an engine swap this is perfect.

I’m going to have to do something soon, my original D-series is developing blow-by and wrist pin wear. It’s almost at 300k miles so I’m not even mad. I really want a K24/K20 hybrid with a TSX 6 speed. My car is just a commuter, but I need the torque to pass on these mountain roads. The H22A4 out of the SH is a very good choice, but damn are they expensive compared to the $400 of the K24. The K swap parts are more expensive, but are cheaper to work on.

Yes

To be honest, I stopped paying attention to Honda after 2001 or so, so most of the k-series info is out of my scope. Good to know though!

yes yes yes and yes
although i believe the b16 head is preferred over the gsr’s b18.
but the engine build is possible, and the engine bay will hold it with a few oem mount changes.
ecu will play too
