Handsome, ain’t he?
I posted yesterday asking about oil for my ‘89 Camry, named Carl by various daughters of mine who have had this car assigned to them. After careful consideration of the carefully considered replies, I decided to serve Carl a cocktail of whatever oil I had on hand with a 30 in the viscosity and the cheapest filter available at O’Reilley.
I’ve owned Carl for ten years — I sold a ‘99 Camry and bought the ‘89 — and over 100,000 miles. Best car I’ve ever owned, bar none. So many new parts in the past two years, but that’s what keeps Carl fine.

The first four bottles are fine.
The fifth bottle needs to be labeled “OIL”, inclusive quotes .

What, you mean a brand named “Super Tech” doesn’t scream automotive excellence to you? :P

Loud screaming

That last one looks way too new to not have a winter weight. Can’t be a great sign, but mixed with the other stuff its probably fine...

I know, but BaconS andwich is tasty implied that a company named ‘Sup erTech’ doesn’t scream automotive excellence. I loudly screamed that one company called Supertech does scream automotive excellence.

For some reason it looks like the kind of stuff that Walmart sells that seems to self-immolate way too easily. Maybe it’s not just common in my neck of the woods?

You could even get away with Dollar General’s “obsolete” house brand oil.
“ The front label of the DG 10W-30 oil looks like any other oil, but a warning on the back of the bottle advises that the product is not suitable for engines built after 1988.”

“API Services SA.” I always look for SG or SH, minimally. Latest is SN. But regular folk would have no idea about that. Hang ‘em, says I.
Even Walmart’s SuperTech SAE30 oil is API
SN.

Despite working for Valvoline for a few years, I am biased toward Castrol and it is 100% because of Sega Rally Championship.

Fair enough. Personally? I rely upon the API designation, primarily.

I just use Rotella in everything for the most part. I wouldn’t run that DG slop in anything, regardless of year.
Edit: I had an early onset senior moment and thought yours was an '87 for some reason, though you pretty clearly said '99. Do'h.

Sold the ‘99 and bought an ‘89.

And that was a typo. Lmfao. Batting 1k over here. Meant ‘89.
I think I need to eat. My brain may be consuming itself. ;)

Hey: it’s API SN...

API-SN. Good enough for me.

Why are you so
old
?

That'll do! The one time I changed the oil in the RallyMetro, I bought the O'Rielly $15 jug and cheap filter special.

You mean, aside from the whole Highlander thing?

Mobil 1 at Wally World is a fantastic price in a 5-qt jug. Like $23 a jug or something.

I know. I still end up buying whatever is on sale usually for my truck though. My truck takes 6-quarts, so buy the time I buy a 6th quart and a Napa Gold filter for it, I still end up spending $35. My local independent mechanic only charges $30 to change it with Lucas Oil synthetic blend. These days, if I can't find a sale that makes it worth changing it myself, I just let Rich do it. He's an excellent mechanic, and charges a very fair price for his work.

Nothing wrong with that. Then again, I change the oil diligently every 5,000 miles -- five or zero in the thousands place on the odometer -- and rotate the tires and inspect the brakes and have a general look around. On the Safari, I also lube the front suspension, which has had the effect of making those parts last many years on a model of vehicle that is widely panned for wearing out front end parts.

Neither mine. I wasn’t having a go, I’d just never heard of Su pe rTech so I googled them and found Supertech :)
