The show is great for psyching myself up for wrenching. The guy stays positive through so much crap it’s awesome.

Wat are some other good shows on YouTube for wrenching pep?  I know about divorce, but what else?

Hard to believe that’s what the Evora looked like when he stared out. That was the build that made me subscribe

Too bad that Evora is pretty much a deathtrap if it’s involved in another major front-end collision. I get that the guy means well, but he does a lot of REALLY questionable things that I hope nobody ever emulates.

Perhaps, it's not crash tested, so it's really hard to say either way.  Furthermore, people can freely build a kit car that would almost assuredly be worse than the Evora, so what gives?

He bolted massive steel box sections to the front of a car built around a bonded aluminum tub. In a major front-end collision, that steel will punch right through the front bulkhead and enter the passenger compartment. It’s incredibly unsafe.

Yeah, I get that.  I wouldn't do everything the way he does.  Honestly, neither of us have crash tested it.  Are you vehemently against kit cars too?

I’ve tried and failed 3 times to write a response to this that isn’t overly condescending, so I’m going to abstain. Agree to disagree, I guess.

I’ll just say that, as a mechanical  engineer, I can’t agree with the way he often does things.

Have any suggestions for a show?

I appreciate that. I understand the negativity that a lot feel towards his methods of getting a car back and operational.

Do you have any shows to suggest and again, what's your take on kit cars?

The only youtube car show I currently watch is Project Binky, but somebody else already mentioned it. They put a lot of thought and effort into the work they do, and it really shows in the end product. Conversely, they also take approximately 1000x longer than B is for Build to do anything, so there’s certainly a trade-off.

With regards to kit cars, it kinda depends. There are a lot of kit cars out there that have a lot of genuine engineering behind them; Lister Bell, Race Car Replicas (RCR), Factory Five, and hell, even Noble (since they were considered “kit cars” in the US) . While these cars certainly wouldn’t pass, say, NHSTA’s small overlap test, they’re still engineered and built with quality materials.

On the other end of the spectrum, you have all the old kit cars from the 60s-80s that were built on stripped-down VW chassis. These are likely not safe in the slightest, but I think most people that own those nowadays kinda know what they’re getting in to. Most of these tend to be that Meyers Manx-style dune buggies that don’t seem much road use, anyway.

Some of Bif B’s work reminds me of that guy that built a “death kart” out of tube steel and donor bits from a Civic (he died when it crumpled like paper in an accident) . It’s very... hodge-podge, using off-the-shelf materials that are not selected for their appropriateness to the application. Another comparison could be made to people that install roll bars or roll cages in their cars; any sanctioned racing body has strict requirements governing the material used to built a roll cage, because mild steel from your local hardware store behaves COMPLETELY differently under load than 4130 chromoly.

While I would hope that he wouldn’t be this shady, there’s also the fact that a kit car is registered as a kit car, and people would come into them with certain expectations; his cars get registered under rebuilt titles, and while he hasn’t sold the Lotus (as far as I’m aware), I know he has sold some of his other projects.

Honestly, I’m fine with the kind of work that he got his start on; the BRZs he rebuilt were mostly just body damage, so he was cutting out and replacing quarter panels, replacing damaged suspension components, etc. It was when I saw him rebuild the front of the Evora with steel that I got upset. Structural work, ESPECIALLY within the primary  crumple zones of a car, is not something that you half-ass and guess on .

Honestly, I’m not much of a TV show guy. Or a YouTube guy. (Way too many idiots promoting downright false if not dangerous shit.) Or worse: making people think that they can rebuild a vehicle with a damaged frame in their garage. (Which goes quadruple for stuff like Lotus where it’s a bonded composite.)

Personally, I just crank my music up. Though maybe when I get the new house, I’ll set up a camera in the garage and just stream me working on my cars on twitch or something.

I cringed at the frame repair, but it’s his call. I do get entertainment out of his show and enjoy it for that. Again, even the well engineered kit cars crash like shit. I looked at factory five’s Cobra for a bit in my eternal quest for the perfect open top car and with no testing or standards and more than a bit of anecdotal evidence of being “about the same as a motorcycle” I said fuck it. I honestly don’t see how his repair is any worse than that standard and if somebody is allowed to build and drive that car, why is what he did so far off from that? He’s not selling i t to other people, nor is he telling them to do what he does. I can only assume there are incredibly few people who will try to emulate that repair on an Evora, the numbers just aren’t there.

So, I watch it for entertainment value. S ome people can’t and I get that. My wife can’t stand breaking bad due to her residency in a hospital. I do it because the guy stays at it and it provides me motivation when some days are so long but I’d still like to wrench.
