To be honest, I see a first-gen Smart about once a week, even in suburbia. More frequently if I’m downtown. I’ve only ever seen a handful that weren’t first-gen. It’s like the early adopters bought them and kept them.

A lady at our church drives a Brabus version. Cool looking, even if it’s mostly aesthetics.
