This-
With a Volvo t5 engine/trans and muffler delete. Always loved the first gen mazda5 and they share the c1 platform with the c30 and s40 so wikipedia leads me to believe the subframe is the same. Any oppos have experience with t5 reliability? There's a good chance I'll need a cheap beater in a couple months and not sure if I should get the mazda5 first or the s40 first lol.

A team in the lap of America challenge did it in a mazdaspeed3 swapped mazda5. My initial opinion is that would be easier and better.

Fuck yeah, that Mazdaspeed5!

Why yes, Head gasket blew at 250k miles and it was gonna be 3-4 k to replace. So I’d differently get a rebuilt one.
Other than that, the engine had no issues for the 6 months or so I owned it.

Maybe easier, i dunno about the wiring with the Volvo engine. But I’d wanna go for the t5 for the sound and cool factor, after all this is highly highly unlikely to ever happen although I am looking at both mazda5s and s40s on Craigslist. The big thing is I think I’d want to go automatic for it, and I doubt the stock trans would take it, so that leaves a cx7 engine/trans swap or the t5. And the cx7 would have a different subframe and might be harder to fit with the trans. Plus s40s are way cheaper. I know you could get a manual in both the 5 and the s40 but I really don’t like the feel in the older 3 and 5 so I’d have to drive an s40 and see if that’s any better. But for practicality in this build I’m ok with an auto I think.

Knowing that the c30/s40/v50 chassis is related to the 3 and therefor the 5, I’ve has this thought before seems like a great idea but not one I’d spend the time on

2.3l turbo MZR. Like 268 horsepower.

I feel like you’re missing the forest for the trees. Yes, you can get a decent sound out of a volvo 5 cylinder and yes, that would be an uncommon swap in the mazda 5. But after a few miles of it......wouldnt the novelty wear off? Doubly so if you put in an autobox transmission. At the end of the day you’d spend all that money for....a slightly quicker mazda 5 that sounds okay and can’t be easily fixed or maintained since the vehicle was never meant to have the drivetrain it has?
If all you want is the volvo sounds, then just get a volvo. I know they don’t make a minivan but I assure you, you’ll probably enjoy either the mazdaspeed 5 more, or you’ll enjoy your raucous XC volvo more than you would this headache of a machine.
Props to you if you can do this build....but make sure you do it for yourself because I don’t see many people getting all “OH DUDE! THIS GU PUT A VOLVO 5 CYLINDER AND AN AUTOMATIC IN HIS MAZDA 5!!!!!!” afterwards.

Why go Volvo when the MS3 driveline should swap in pretty easily?

Well the uniqueness is definitely part of it, also the sound. But i also kinda want to go automatic instead of manual and a cx7 swap might be harder not sure. I would think the volvo would more or less bolt in and just be wiring issues whereas the cx7 might have a harder time fitting with the beefier trans but wiring should be simpler although probably still not plug and play.

Makes sense then.
Carry on. ;)

I mean, you're not wrong, that's why its just a thought experiment lol. I dunno, something about it just appeals to me. I do want to get a Mazda 5 but in all honesty it would probably stay pretty stock.

Psst, too easy. It's a thought experiment, dream big!

I probably wouldn’t either, just day(night) dreaming here
I do want a Mazda 5 though.

I mean, I don’t think I’d expect more t han 250k out of a ford era volvo anyways.... but definitely something to look out for.

Just day dreaming, I do want a Mazda 5 for my next dd though....

I’ve always wanted to stuff the 4.0L/6-speed combo into one of my 2nd gen vans.
Then I found out you have to swap and integrate the whole body harness.....

Forgot to mention, I was doing some research and apparently it’s a fairly common failure after 150k, and the cylinder heads have a tendency to warp so bad they need to be replaced. So I’d just be wary of any junkyard motors.

Yeah I'm afraid this would be similar....

If I went that route I'd probably rebuild it before putting it in, but good to know. Honestly I'd probably get the mazda5 for a cheap dd and then when it gets retired if I'm feeling ambitious I'll look for an s40 donor. Very unlikely though lol.

I can sort the engine with Megasquirt, but getting the trans to play without the factory wiring/computers is the issue as no one makes a good standalone that works with Chrysler transmissions.

Yeah maybe I should stick to a manual after all and simplify things.

Manual is generally easier to swap, at least from an electronics stand point. They can get very in depth getting all the cables and/or linkages sorted, not that I know anything about that: https://oppositelock.kinja.com/thought-id-post-up-my-old-acclaim-build-for-everyone-1823032640

Yeah it might not be too bad if the shell was already a manual Mazda 5 though.

Pick up a wrecked manual 5 and swap everything over.
